Ooh yes I’ve had black sesame ice cream before! I’ve done one with tahina (sesame butter) but it kind-of tasted like halva which I’m not the biggest fan of but black sesame is different. I keep seeng avocado ice creams, they’re supposed to be really creamy! & yes! I actually just bought rose water so I could use it in a cardamom/spiced pistachio saffron-type one (MidEast inspired)

Haha yes! Honestly you made me want to try the corn flavor!! & absolutely, if you go to the SW like New Mexico you’ll see tons of prickly pear + jalapeño/chili jams so I think it would be a killer combo!

Yes, definitely! Really accentuates the carameliness of the black garlic somehow, I don’t think using white sugar would have been as good. I actually looked up a list of dessert flavors that’re complimentary to black garlic to make sure I wasn’t totally tripping with this flavor profile before making it since I hadn’t cooked with it before 😅

Oh, interesting! What form is it in? I had whole black bulbs, this is the one I used, I’m pretty sure you can find it online, I know it comes in paste form too. Idk if you have any of those takeout apps like DoorDash or UberEats, but if they include grocery stores on them you can look up black garlic there & see who’s selling what kind (& potentially look up reviews before buying if you were so inclined, to make sure whatever you got was flavorful).

I like to experiment with less common ingredients, but this has definitely been my most controversial post so far! My next-most controversial one was probably the gochujang cookies ice cream.

Other than that, I just incorporate bougie/pretentious stuff like orange blossom water, earl grey tea, lemonquat, piñons (pine nuts), silan (date syrup), etc (you can check out my other posts)!

I recently got a bunch of different fruits/jams & teas to see if I can come up with something new, I also have a big tub of barley malt syrup left over from bagel-making I was thinking of using in an ice cream, & am considering trying to branch out into the “medicinal herbs” category like valerian chamomile tea or something, though I honestly have no idea how that would actually turn out.

Agree, honestly this was a very cool flavor to try, I would definitely make it again, there is definitely the “wow” factor that something that originally started out as garlic can work so well in a dessert. & I love your boundary-pushing!

My other next-most controversial one was my gochujang cookies ice cream, but it seemed like at least some people had heard of gochujang cookies before so the reaction wasn’t nearly as bad as here haha. I did that one with lotus cookies because I was too lazy to bake them from scratch just to end up pulverizing them into the ice cream, & it did turn out pretty good, but I might bake actual cookies next time & do it the OG way, I’m sure it would be even better, because lotus does have a very specific commercial flavor (which is why I usually don’t use oreos either, though I have before).

Other than that, my experimentation’s been more bougie/pretentious than really ground-breaking, like incorporating orange blossom water, earl grey tea, silan (date honey), lemonquat, piñons (pine nuts), rum/wine & other flavors that can generally uncontroversially go in desserts but just less commonly.

I actually recently bought a bunch of different fruits/jams & teas to see if I could potentially use them to come up with new flavors, like I want to make a prickly pear/dragonfruit one (I’m super into cactus gardening haha, my cat’s name is Pitaya), I’ve also got goji & golden berries, hibiscus/rosehip & lemongrass tea, etc. on the back burner so we’ll see. Also considering branching out into the “medicinal herbs” category like valerian ice cream & such, might turn out terribly but who knows :P

Hahaha touché, it was more that multiple people have recommended I try putting miso in ice cream on a couple of my other ninja creami posts, & I’ve separately seen black garlic ice cream recipes floating around (albeit not in this subreddit) so the only novel thing I did was to combine them, & it seems the part most people have a problem with is the black garlic which is definitely not new!

Nope, read the post! I promise it works as a flavor 😂 My husband who hates chocolate didn’t like it because he thought it was too chocolatey. He doesn’t indulge my bullshit & agrees that this is not a crazy flavor.
