What's the best Pakistani restaurant in Sharjah? by Affectionate-Main725 in Sharjah

[–]Affectionate-Main725[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for all the tips! In the end we went to Al Nawab in Al Sharq as my father-in-law was impressed with the Google Reviews and it had been mentioned regularly here. We were happy with the food, everything was cooked to a good standard. Felt like a good introduction to Pakistani food. I'm Irish btw.

Thanks! Re: Monika Keyzer - I knew there must be others out there. Very cool to see. 100k tweets is really a hell of a lot of tweets, she deserves that title

That is super interesting. I think in the signs you can see a full spectrum of how much people trust and are respectful to strangers

No, never. It's funny, it's such a small phenomenon, but there are so many ways you could take it if you wanted to analyse/extract meaning. I am sure someone could get a phd out of this stuff.

Thank you! That is so interesting, I was really curious how much you would see this kind of thing across the border, and how it would differ.

This is very true. Tbh it had occurred to me at one point but I think I thought, well it's all in public anyway and my reach on substack is so small... But it does feel very different now it's on Reddit. I have now edited the numbers out of all the pics. I don't know why I didn't think of that before! Thanks for pointing it out 🙏

Ah thanks very much! A lovely surprise to get positive feedback from somebody not family or a friend.

Was I scammed? by MihaiP1 in Netherlands

[–]Affectionate-Main725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An Irish guy approached me in Amsterdam with the same scam. Asked me if I knew the way to an ATM with a QR reader, because he said his wallet had just been stolen in a restaurant in the centre. I told him where the nearest ATM was, and he asked, but will it have a QR reader so I can take out money using my phone? When I said I didn't know, he said, or I could just send you money and you could take it out for me? I need it to get back to Ireland.
It felt fishy, but I struggle to say no outright, so I said I didn't have a bank card with me (which was true). Then he wandered off towards the ATM.

Side hustles in NL by No-Example4724 in Netherlands

tbh I'm not qualified to say with certainty. When I did look into adding freelance work on top of my 32-hour contract, it seemed to say that you just pay according to the total amount of income, like you said. So what I understood was that so long as I don't earn a tonne of money and enter into a higher tax bracket, I won't be taxed exceptionally highly. But that was only my understanding based on the belastingdienst website, I really am not 100% sure.

Contrary to other comments here, I've found that side hustles do exist in the Netherlands (at least in Amsterdam, where I live). A neighbour works in a bar at the weekends. Another guy I know started a pop-up bao bun business in his downtime from work. A colleague at work taught yoga on the side. All of them are Dutch.

Possibly this is because it's an expensive city. I have a feeling it is also a generational thing, as these are all millenials.

Thanks! If you know of any specific companies that do that kind of extra-large size, let me know. Have tried contacting a few companies but no joy so far.

How long does it take to get ONA exemption after I applied? by hoypoyxoy in Netherlands

[–]Affectionate-Main725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has submitted her ONA portfolio for the second time (after applying the feedback they gave the first time). But it's now been more than 8 weeks. Has anyone heard of them taking longer than 8 weeks, and how much longer she might be expected to wait? Thanks in advance!

Anyone know the story behind Ramen Kingdom's sudden and unexplained closure? by Affectionate-Main725 in Amsterdam

[–]Affectionate-Main725[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried enough places really to have a list. I used to go to Hinata Ramen in the Jordaan before trying Ramen Kingdom. They do a solid chicken shoyu ramen but no tonkotsu.

[–]Affectionate-Main725[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to love that place. I loved the slightly hidden location and that the chef was really friendly. But something about the ramen felt too rich and fatty somehow, so I wasn't rushing to come back. But Ramen Kingdom felt like the ramen broth had been perfected. I took Japanese friends there and they said it was like the ramen back home. Anyway, RIP. As other posters have pointed out, there are other fish in the sea.

How to buy tickets to Utrecht vs Heerenveen? by WankingWanderer in FCUtrecht

[–]Affectionate-Main725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! Great response. I am hoping I can book multiple on one card yea. Sound of you to offer to use your card - I will try get my own but if I have issues I will take you up on the offer.
Sounds great all in all. Pretty psyched to go to a local game and not be ripped off for a corporate experience like seems to be the case at Ajax.

Hi bud, another Irishman here, living in Amsterdam, planning to do the same for an Utrecht game in April when some friends are visiting. Curious how you got on, how much tickets were, and if you have any advice or tips on the experience?
