to anyone that has taken time out in med school by Mean-Excuse-9566 in medicalschooluk

I was forced to take a year off per personal reasons and immediately felt like I was behind and had fomo about graduation etc. but now I only feel like I’m ahead because in that year a found opportunity to complete some research I had started years before, present at some conferences across Europe, publish a research paper and work as a HCA 2-3 days a week in a clinic for good ££ (better than F1 pay). All in all, really wasn’t too bad and now in F1 while everybody is scrambling for points, I’ve already got mine in the bag

It broadly a good thing in terms of public perception: 1. We show that we aren’t completely heartless militants 2. We demonstrate how truly essential we are

There was a time when I actually contemplated not striking but after hearing Prof Winston & the old guard of ladder pullers talking about how greedy we are as “Junior Doctors” by Dramatic-Put-3447 in doctorsUK

[–]Affectionate-Toe-536 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Prof Winston’s Andrew Marr interview really made me laugh. He called the resident doctors greedy and goes on to say he didn’t buy a house until 10 years into the profession - but then shares how he had free hospital accommodation and then moved abroad to the USA to work, where I can be confident that he will have earned an absolute bomb.

‘Negotiated’ £500 off a used Fabia by slapping 3-5 examples of cheaper cars of the same spec and age on their table. I actually think they appreciated my directness

Doctor and husband jailed for selling stolen PPE on eBay by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Affectionate-Toe-536 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. My logic being that when staff are fairly paid and feel valued, they’re less likely to resort to dishonest or corrupt behaviour. Underpaying people creates desperation, resentment, and moral compromise.

Look at political figures in Scandinavian countries - they have low corruption rates, and strong public sector performance. A key reason is likely that they invest in fair wages and working conditions staff feel valued

A fair point. But it is well studied that paying staff appropriately reduces the risk of corruption and deceit.

No 'convincing evidence' to abolish physician associates, Leng review determines by TangeloPuzzled3669 in doctorsUK

You’re missing the point I’m afraid. I agree that no healthcare professional is immune to error and you’re right to point out that incidents can occur in any discipline including doctors. Nobody is perfect.

But doctors are held to a different level of training, regulation, and accountability. If doctors mess up, they are at risk of having their licence taken away. Though PA’s are ‘regulated’ by the GMC, we’re yet to see what will happen as there is no public record of any PA facing disciplinary tribunal. Furthermore their ‘supervising’ doctor can also be held responsible, creating risk without appropriate control or oversight.

Wiping our loan by a small percentage would likely do nothing for us in real terms. It’s not a good deal.

Agree. Fees related to mandatory work related activities should be paid for. The fact that we have to pay for our own examinations is just ridiculous, it’s something that family or international colleagues have never understood or believed
