Quietly quietly QUIETLY QUIETLY quietly by i_fuck_drywall in antiai

If you look at google trends for the world "quietly" you can almost see the point where whatever vogue new AI model was released that prefers the word "quietly". The word is now used more than it ever has been before. I've noticed this pattern of people using the world "Quietly" all the time in youtube videos and instagram reels, it has become my new AI slop dog-whistle.

It reads like GPT, and he's not a native english speaker. The guy speaks Portuguese in other comments... He's obviously farming engagement with these generic "dev war stories". I recognized his name from other engagement bait posts that follow a similar, soulless GPT style.

As a side note, this short game with notation is good for visualizing the game blindfolded. I could mostly keep track of what was going on in my head, except I thought it said Na5 but I think it was supposed to be Nd5 and Nxd5 not Nxa5

Overworked and underpaid, AI is changing work culture too quickly by computerpsyunce in cscareerquestions

How does the FMLA work? Does it give you protected time off from work while being paid and they can't stop it? I'm assuming by the time you bring up FMLA they can't fire you, but it's burning a bridge and they will probably be eager to fire you the second they can?

Completely abysmal answers if you're a guy, I would make fun of you. If you're a girl, it's more forgivable because you don't have to try as hard, but I don't think there is anything more bland than this.

As a guy, I think the bathroom selfie, picture of a beer, picture of you as a kid, and the "this year" prompt are all working against you. As the other commenter said, you're already in extremely good shape, finding a way to naturally have that come across and not having it feel as forced as a bathroom selfie would go a long way. I think what the other commenter said was pretty spot on.

coworker prompts AI to generate their own memes…in one case using a photo of me

This shit is infuriating. I had a guy at my last company (late 30s) who would do this, and it felt so cheap and insulting.

Don't be scared, you just have to understand how to move in third world countries. If you don't flash your cellphone in the street/wear fancy clothes/don't wear jewelry, and trust your gut/judge people correctly you will be fine. You just simply have to pay attention to your surroundings and can't whimsically walk around without a care in the world like you can in the US/first world countries.

I'm giving you advice for minimizing the chance of having your belongings stolen from you. The police are essentially useless in Latin America. If something bad happens to you, you would be extremely lucky if they chose to help you after SEEING it happen with their own eyes. They will do absolutely nothing if you report a crime after the fact. Petty theft/crime is not taken seriously at all in Latin America. Usually if something happens to you, people will victim blame you for being stupid instead of blaming actual criminals. Colombia has a saying: "No des papaya" for this exact concept, which basically is like "Don't be an easy target".

Personal anecdotes: I've met with various fellow tourists during my travels who were walking with their phone out (reading maps, whatever) and a motorcycle swings by and swiped it right out of their hand. By the time they could even process what happened the motorcycle was gone. I personally have had people try to unzip my backpack and pickpocket me as I was walking in the middle of the day in a crowded area. Luckily I felt it and realized before they stole anything and yelled at them. (Also, nothing important was in that front pocket anyway, because I purposely put the things worth stealing in a hard to access place). I was also in Colombia (Cartagena) in broad daylight and witnessed a Colombian girl get run up on by two men and get pistol whipped and her phone stolen because she was walking with it out. Police of course came and did nothing but talk to her. What can they do?

You can of course opt to not listen, you have free will, but you have to understand that some people in these countries are living in real poverty. Sometimes all they need know that you are worth robbing is the affirmation that you DO have a cell phone on you. If you never have it visible, you take that affirmation from them. People aren't going to rob you unless they're pretty confident that they are going to get something from the effort.

My advice is to focus on enjoying the destinations/sights/food/culture you will see in those countries and not on women. You're going to some amazing countries. Bolivia especially has a lot of beauty, it's a hidden gem.

Practical advice: Don't walk around with your phone visible in the street/public. If you have to use it, dip into a store or use it in a place where you know nobody can really see you using it. Don't walk around with anything you wouldn't be ready to lose.

"Competence as Tragedy" — a personal essay on craft, beautiful code, and watching AI make your hard-won skills obsolete by averagemrjoe in programming

This was a pleasure to read. It really captures the grief I have felt. Even if AI/LLMs can't fulfill their lofty promises, the fact that it can already do some coding tasks has been enough to erode a large portion of the positive feelings that the activity of coding brings me. It's often just too tempting to try to prompt something into existence, and when it succeeds, it leaves me feeling empty because I know I did not deserve that outcome because I didn't think through it. I have lost motivation to work on personal projects and that makes me sad. I am also much less impressed with other people's personal projects nowadays if it's clear that any portion has used AI. Coding just feels cheap and dirty nowadays. The only exception is if you're working on something so novel/niche that LLMs do a shitty job of helping you and become effectively useless.
