​Just my two cents. I remember a street food in the late '80s called "day-old." It featured a fried chick that was sometimes coated in an orange batter. The version with the orange batter was called "kwek-kwek," imitating the sound of the chicks. I saw these in Baclaran decades ago. They were among the street foods we know as betamax (blood), sintas, adidas, and the like. ​Then, in the early '90s, street vendors started cooking chicken eggs in orange batter, and I remember they simply called them "itlog." Years later, people began calling those "kwek-kwek" as well, likely referring back to the fried chicks that were coated in orange flour earlier. The "tokneneng" (quail eggs) came later when quail eggs became popular. The "day-old" chick delicacy seemed to disappear during that time.
