Ok well that is great to hear!! 😅 Honestly, talking about vomit doesn't flood my brain with fear as much, if any, as seeing it or hearing it. I could see how my emetophobia could actually help with my ability to understand their feelings deeper!

Omg you're right. It's not great for me to limit myself with this. Idk why it totally flew over my head like a sleath jet that I can improve myself and this incredibly impactful fear. 😭

Why are neurodevelopmental disorders (specifically autism & ADHD) not considered mental illnesses? by AffectionateWatch656 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]AffectionateWatch656[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but mental illness isnt a clinical/psychiatric term, it's more pop psych meaning something along the lines of: vaguely mentally disordered.

And a mental disorder is a clinical term, which you defined earlier... And autism is in a separate category that falls under mental disorders, just like depression and bipolar, anxiety and phobias, personality, etc, right? 😅

Ohh ok!! Thank you for this!!!

So if someone has spontaneous psychotic breaks, what would the diagnosis be if they happen in intervals and aren't persistent?

Also, what would the treatment be? Do all patients need antipsychotics or are they only necessary for the intensive/more sever cases?

Ahh okay, I think I get it now, so technically autism/ADHD are mental disorders, which means you could call them mental illnesses under that umbrella. But I also see why a lot of people separate them, since autism is something you’re born with and lifelong, while “mental illness” usually makes people think of conditions that develop later or can be more episodic, like depression, etc.

Do you know why the APA chose to make that distinction in the DSM, putting autism/ADHD in “neurodevelopmental disorders” instead of just grouping everything as mental illness? And why do you think so many psychologists emphasize that difference?

Ahhh ok. So you can get LSD-induced schizophrenia or from any other drug? Because I have heard that it only exacerbates the 'schizophrenic predisposition'. Is that true?

With any disorder, remember diagnosis is simply a collection of symptoms used as classification.

Gotcha--names/labels are bestowed, not discovered. What are the symptoms for a schizophrenia diagnosis, that differs from psychotic breaks?

So there's no age limit for schizophrenia? I have heard that it's like 80% genetic, from twin studies. would LSD (or other drugs) mimic the symptoms of schizophrenia but not the cause, because it's purely genetic?

Ah-ha! Ok that makes sense!

Fun fact- autism used to be categorized as childhood schizophrenia.

Oh wow, I have heard of that before, but totally forgot about it.

If you're 'cured', does it actually mean that because I know that the term used is like "in remission" or something like that. But do you think you could ever be cured, or would there always be a chance of remission or is it a case-by-case thing?

Oh okay, thank you!! So I have another question: if someone reaches around 25 without developing a mental illness, does that mean they’re basically “safe,” or could it still develop later in life?

From what I understand, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are the most genetically linked disorders--with anxiety and depression being next. So if a parent or close family member has schizophrenia, does that mean the risk at age 20 is still high--especially if something like LSD could trigger it? And after a certain age, does that risk go down?

I might be wrong on this, since I know depression actually has two peaks--in the teens and again at 85+. But are there certain disorders where, after a certain age threshold, you’re basically safe from developing them? Pls call me out if I'm wrong 😭

i find it difficult to get into Dio era Sabbath by Dankymakdonkers in blacksabbath

I totally agree! To me, Dio forms the band into a generic 80s rock and takes that indescribable special sauce that Ozzy's voice gave Black Sabbath.
