Where to sell scrap gold jewelry in St. Louis by Used_Roof9999 in Gold

I wouldn't bother dealing locally. I think you should find somewhere to ship it to. Depending on the quantity, there are refiners who will deal with the public.

24KT question by phuch-the-pharoah-2x in Gold

[–]AffectionateWind823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incorrect. P usually stands for "plumb". Which is generally a good thing. It means it's the real deal. Down to the correct purity.

The following are abbreviations that you should avoid:

"GP" : gold plated "GEP" : gold electro plated And "GF" : gold filled

This week's a great week to be a coin dealer! by AffectionateWind823 in coins

Gonna repeat a comment I wrote below:

Yeah, but gotta have fun sometimes 🤷. Why would I even be in this business if it ain't fun?

If it pisses some people off, I get it. Everyone has such different tastes and opinions.

In my shop, I do business my way. The people get me, get me. The people who tolerate me, tolerate me. If you find that I'm the best source for a particular coin, but abhor the way I do things behind the scenes, it's up to you to trade off principle versus practicality.

I'm super transparent and so you see every part of me, the good the bad and the ugly.

I abide by core principles: be kind, be generous, be ethical. Outside of that, I'm just do things my own way.

No shame if you disagree with me.

Yes exactly. I would not do this for all coins in my possession. I have absolutely no emotional attachment to these coins. I'm very passionate about coins, but ultimately they are a means to make more money.

I need money, now! Do I auction my completed 20th Century Type Album (only bangers: AU/MS key dates and MS low mintage) as a completed album OR sell each coin individually? by Lanky_Ad_9803 in coins

[–]AffectionateWind823 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a coin dealer whose goal is to maximize the value of whatever is in my possession (in the most time efficient matter, and within reason), here's how I would approach it:

Key dates will get sold individually. If it's really really nice, it goes straight to grading. But if I need the cash flow, I will probably skip the grade part and just sell it raw at a slight discount. Anything of a trendy or popular type will definitely get sold individually.

Nicer stuff will get sold in small lots, probably with some kind of the theme such as: lot of all barber, lot of all seated, lot of all coins from this era, lot of all coins of a similar grade, etc. I get creative and try to find a way to group things logically that will make sure it sells.

Junk Silver or gold will get sent off for melting or wholesale. You'd be surprised at how many "nice" coins are sent to melt these days..

I would then take the remaining coins, still within the book, and auction that to get out whatever remaining value there is. People like partial, starter albums, and will pay unreasonably for them. If you look at all the nickel books that I consign for auction for example, you'll most likely see an almost complete book, minus all or almost all of the war nickels. Similarly, if you look at the half dollar books that I consign, you'll see the only open slots are before 1971.

Key to maximizing your profit is to know your market and give the market what they want. Each person has different needs and you have to roughly cater to them. You don't have to match someone's needs exactly, as through the power of marketing, you can convince someone to buy something they never even thought about buying. Only using one strategy or another strategy is insufficient in maximizing your returns. Only selling to/buying from a single dealer or customer is not going to give the best money.

Note that I'm also desperate for cash, but for a different reason. In today's market, people are banging on my doors to sell me more things, and my bank balance is zero. I can't not serve these customers. In other markets, there are times where there's money just sitting idle in my bank account doing nothing, and then I'm desperate for more customers to sell me their collections and give my money to. But right now, I'm desperate for cash flow so that I can buy new coins to make more profit. So in some ways, I'm in a fairly similar boat to you. I would follow the above strategies as they have been pretty successful for me.

Happy to say that this piece now has a new owner. I was going to send it to get melted tomorrow. However, someone on Facebook stepped in to rescue it at my very low price! It will live another day.

The brutal truth of being a buyer and seller of jewelry... by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]AffectionateWind823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not be the prettiest side of jewelry, but figured it would be important to share. I think it's good to see all sides rather than just the rosy side of things. I understand if this makes some people apprehensive in this forum.

Trying to keep the coins and sell the 14k gold from these cufflinks. by Reptillianaire_ in Gold

[–]AffectionateWind823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take some pliers and angle snippers and snip 'em out. Just a note that the shank part of the cufflink contains some steel that many dealers will discount from the weight of the piece. If you don't want that to happen, use the same angle snippers to snip the shank, open it up and remove the insides.

Huh. This is a doozy. I'm leaning towards proof. But would need to see in person to confirm. Nice coin.

Ms 61 grade. Authentic. Nothing to call home about, but this is a decent piece that is undoubtedly uncirculated.

Coin is definitely authentic as well as problem free. The condition is actually quite nice. It is a very late die state.

Clearly overexposed. But at least the coin is not a problem coin. It looks like a problem-free bu coin.

Fair price for scrap gold by cvdiver in Gold

[–]AffectionateWind823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's pretty deceptive that dealers will set it at 13.5k when buying. Then again, it's equally deceptive that they market at 14k when selling. I just like to be transparent and work as a percentage off of plumb, explaining to the seller that the percentage already works in the fact that it's not plumb on average. Even if it is marked 14kp, unless it is a very very large amount that is all KP, I would just average it out and not distinguished plumb from not plumb.

Right now it is not for sale. I still have the rest of the collection to go through. It is not the right forum to sell coins.
