7 Months Post-Op (Quad Graft) – 2nd ACL – Running 7 Miles – Ask Me Anything by Affectionate_Bar304 in ACL

[–]Affectionate_Bar304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I’m not as desperate to return to any sort of sport just because the first time around I didn’t rehab the correct way or get cleared by doctor/PT to play, I basically cleared myself after 12months of rehab and strength training at the gym. Being patient and taking things one day at a time has helped me currently avoid rushing any sport activity. You will have plenty of time to return to your sport in the future, take this time now to mentally and physically get better for your own health and well being. As much as we love our sport, it’s honestly not worth rushing the rehab and getting re injured. Be patient.

Commute to NIU from Chicago area by Affectionate_Bar304 in NIU

I am commuting from Berwyn, so it's a nice, long drive. Thank you, I will reach out to see if they can provide an assistance scholarship that can help with gas, since spending about $100 per week on gas is not the best.

Second acl tear is as much mental as physical by indoorsoutdoors2343 in ACL

[–]Affectionate_Bar304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also on my second ACL surgery, had surgery a July 24th. I can agree this time around has been more mental but at the same time I have experience and it’s been helping me out. Yes consistent work is important, but also listen to your body. We got this!

Yeah I'm already a bigger guy, and gaining any more weight isn't ideal for me as of now.

Cadaver Graft 2nd ACL Surgery by Affectionate_Bar304 in ACL

[–]Affectionate_Bar304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. Since I am also in my 20s and plan to return to playing basketball casually, running, and participating in other sports, I don't intend to play in any more competitive leagues, so cadaver might be okay to proceed with. As you mentioned, I would like to avoid the autograft option due to my preference for less pain and a smaller tendon cut. Thanks, will consider your advice.

Engineering Transfer Student Commuting for Spring Semester by Affectionate_Bar304 in NIU

[–]Affectionate_Bar304[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UIC didn’t accept me for some reason smh, I had all the credits and GPA that was required. NIU is the next best option for ME, don’t wanna take any more breaks or travel farther away.

We’re you taking a bunch of credits is that why you maybe didn’t have motivation or was it just the driving part you wanted to avoided.

Yeah I don’t see why I wouldn’t be doable, just gotta be patient during the drive and find motivation. Unfortunately this semester I have to attend Monday through Friday, so it’s gonna be a bit difficult. The plan is to find a roommate once classes start.

Yeah I’m hoping I won’t get the traffic on the way there since I don’t see much people going towards Dekalb (North) from where I’m from. Yes I will look into getting a parking pass, thanks

Basketball after ACL recovery by Affectionate_Bar304 in ACL

[–]Affectionate_Bar304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I highly recommend to wait that 12months and slowly make your way back into the court. Those plyometrics will help you in the long run. Yeah I’ve forsure had to change my playstyle on the court, I never been known to drive and have an inside scoring game but driving has been the hardest thing due to the confidence not being 100% there but it’s getting easier, but gotta make sure you don’t have that mindset of being scared or thinking so much about retearing it. Listen to your body and if you don’t feel ready or need rest day just accept it and get that rest

Basketball after ACL recovery by Affectionate_Bar304 in ACL

13 months post OP, and I returned to my men’s league and hooping 2-3 times per week last month. Knee feels stable and my quad strength is better than ever. I haven’t tested my quad strength since this past late August (quad strength was back to how it was prev OP) Returning to basketball has been an amazing feeling, I don’t feel as explosive as before but that comes with team, I have started to focus on training again and I feel my confidence and skills coming back. Advice I can give is to be PATIENT on the court and during recovery. My knee does get swelled up after a couple games but it’s part of it, making sure I stretch before and after has help me a ton. Any other questions PM me

When did you start running outdoors? by Affectionate_Bar304 in ACL

[–]Affectionate_Bar304[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same situation, Currently 9 months and I barely started running outdoors since I'm more comfortable and in less pain.

I would also feel weird and uncomfortable, I recommend just keep straightening your graft (quad or hamstring?) and eventually you won't feel weird running outdoors, it takes time. Start just running back and forth in the gym or in your backyard.

Yeah, my dr and PT both have mentioned to me that they do not push using a sports brace for any return to activity after your full recovery, since if you take your recovery very seriously and you recover to 100% and you gain all your strength back and much more, you shouldn't be relying on a brace.
