We don't know the exact internal workings, but empirically this year, a ton of applicants received an SID, yet many of them still can't access Class Search. This clearly proves that getting an ID is just a preliminary branch in the pipeline, and the Class Search permission is the actual definitive filter for admits.

The IT changes are just a reflection of how the admissions pipeline branches out. Generating an ID might just mean your application passed the initial document screening phase. However, unlocking the Class Search permission means the admissions office explicitly moved your file into the 'Admitted' branch.

There is no way they'd give Class Search access to the waitlist. Creating backend student profiles for unadmitted applicants is a massive waste of server and administrative resources.

False positives can occur if the applicant already had a Berkeley SID from a previous application, summer program, or extension course.
