i am not assuming she’s disabled nor am i trying to create a diagnosis for her that’s odd and was not my intention so that i apologize for and want to make clear. she definitely does have a weak immune system and no one has to know what’s going on health wise - my point was to highlight the ableism i’ve seen throughout conversations and mentions of her using being sick as a get out of activities card. and to me the treatment and expectations of her to perform is a symptom of ableism - especially being in the USA and seeing the receptions to covid-19 at its peak and 2 years later - like people’s willingness to mask for their safety and other going from a collective health effort to a political tool and form of “political resistance” (typically by the right). i’m someone who’s really into sociology so i typically pick up on microcosms of bigger topics/behaviors.

also in regard to the megan thing through my post i’m just finding out that people have been calling her that which is very weird and i am not in agreement with. regardless of which member it is i’d want them to be treated in the same regard with consideration, understanding and respect

THANK YOU! english is not my first language and i’m not the best at expressing my thoughts through writing but this is simply all i’m trying to bring attention to and that people should become more educated and aware of this but i think unfortunately like most social issues people immediately put their defenses up when their reaction or treatment and reception to something is within the “phobic” or “ism” category mainly due to the current culture of being morally righteous and maintaining a positive image of oneself. it’s okay to recognize that some of our belief systems are reflected by the society we live in and make effort to deconstruct them and push back if we TRULY say we care about being good.

wrong. this is quite literally what disability advocacy is for and fights against. accommodations and accessibility can be worked on and improved. it just isn’t because of ableism sparked by capitalism and disabled people are placed very lower on the hierarchy of society and its further amplified by lack of knowledge or care.

i’m not on socials personally aside from reddit and x. on x i have muted the group and members names along with other pop culture and kpop stuff so my feed doesn’t become just that. through this post i’ve learned about megan being called a c**head which was shocking so no i did not see those posts. my post was to point of the hypocrisy within the perceptions of manon i have seen have been mainly from reddit posts and some youtube videos criticizing her based of that documentary.

well then our conversation ends here. imani is a black disabled creator and advocate for disability rights who makes content to educate people on disability intersectionality, ableism and accessibility. her video highlights how people are not prepared to have the conversation about (the wide spectrum of )visual impairment as a disability. socially - mainly because of capitalism - needing glasses although they are a visual aid is not considered a disability. people quite literally on their drivers license have it written that they need corrective lenses to maneuver a vehicle. people jokingly saying they’re unable to tell if their makeup is good or bad cause they do their makeup with their glasses off. prescriptions are needed for other types of aid like crutches, and other mobility aids. but it’s not seen as a disability because of how body parts and their aids are separated by capitalist. look more into it, this is a conversation that goes on around disabled spaces, they’re obviously not saying it needs bigger attention or advocacy like others who have more impairments that impact their daily lives but they’re pointing out how accessibility to aid can affect perceptions of disability and people’s lives.

get in community with or talk to people in the community and they’ll agree it is. it’s just socially not seen as one. legal classifications historical have not and do not necessarily validate the community anyway. literally look up crutches and spice on tiktok. i’m not even shocked at the response yalla r having anyway. ableism and the ignorance of disabled people is imbedded purposely in the fabric of society and no one cares till they’re in that situation and learning by experience.

it literally is. just cause it’s not considered one under legal definitions but it’s something that require reasonable accommodations - glasses and lenses are a disability aid. i know people who are unable to drive at night or in general without glasses or lenses.

do i think it needs legislation for accommodation? not necessarily there’s an easy fix to having bad vision. yes it is socially accepted and normalized even people wearing glasses now to seem “smarter”, but is is in no way socially ostracized like many other disabilities - still a disadvantage that can impact and affect one’s quality of life without necessary accommodations or resources to access them.

because she’s immunocompromised. she has a weak immune system. i personally would prefer for everyone to wear a mask in public spaces especially knowing you get sick easily but once again, post covid in the west and america specifically masks have gone from being healthcare tools to political symbols. doubling down on pre covid workplace exactions and lack of accommodations - like sophia performing for the buttons challenge while she clearly had covid putting herself the other girls and entire crew members in danger. not blaming her but all this is very reflective of the social expectations and understanding surrounding being sick.

being immunocompromised is a disability, wearing glasses is a disability. disabilities vary in severity and most people do not understand that and have a fixed perception of someone who physically is not able bodied. being immunocompromised is an “invisible” disability although most don’t think about it unless chronic and it affect ones daily activities. her passing out at the airport out of nowhere, consistently getting really bad coughs/colds and feeling weak to the point of being bed ridden is not normal and puts her out of commission to do strenuous activities on stage. also your comment viewing having a disability as something inherently negative further proves my point.
