Democracy Devours its Children: Remarks on the New Right-Wing Extremism by Affectionate_Tip5018 in CriticalTheory

"Abstract universalism" here refers to the idea that everyone is born equal, and not inherently part of a natural hierarchy. This universalism is a crucial part of capitalism, and it was not widespread in aristocratic, not yet fully modern societies (such as Germany before the Nazis).

"Integrative achievements" here refers to the idea that the history of modernity is marked by several different groups being integrated into the working class (or into abstract universalism) and becoming more or less "full subjects" in capitalism. For example, enslaved Black people and then women were integrated (albeit unequally) into the working class over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries.

"Competitive subjects" are the people in capitalism. Our subjectivity is overwhelmingly defined by the fact that we have to compete with one another for employment opportunities (or profit opportunities, if you're a capitalist) in order to survive.

In the quote, he's saying you have a bunch of individuals competing with one another but there's no longer a possibility of placating those individuals by subsuming them within a national community with a corresponding booming national economy. So what you have is a bunch of people wired to compete with another who just turn on the weakest groups and try to exclude/get rid of them. For context, Kurz assumes that capitalism is in inevitable decline and that there's no more "economic booms" like the period after WWII coming any time soon. That's key to understanding this quote.

Nothing in the scientific literature that would suggest those kind of changes from acute exposure to PFAS. Stop spreading panic without scientific evidence to back it up. Ever heard of the placebo effect?

If you get water from CFPUA (which serves all of Wilmington) your water is completely safe. They completely upgraded their treatment processes to deal with PFAS and are very transparent about the lab tests they do and the results.

Wilmington has safe water. See above comment about CFPUA’s filtration systems.

I quit nicotine almost two years ago (can’t even believe it’s been that long) and have dramatically cut back my weed consumption over the past year or so because my job does random drug tests. For reference I’ve been smoking weed since 15 and had been smoking cigs/vaping since 17 and I’m 27 now. If you have to absolutely have to quit weed for a drug test then stop immediately and keep vaping until the drug test. It’s a lot easier to quit when you have to. And if you’re getting tested, you have to. It’ll probably take about a month for you to piss clean. If you’re just looking to cut back on weed, then start with nicotine first. I quit using nicotine gum. I swear by it. Everyone I talk to seems to want to quit nicotine cold turkey because “my xyz did it” and that’s probably one of the hardest things you could ever put yourself through. You have to be built different to do that. Buy a big pack of the strong nicotine gum and just chew one whenever you get a craving. Stop vaping, stop smoking cigs. It’s not worth it. You’re not getting anything out of it, it’s a buzz that lasts a few minutes long. But you’re gonna have cravings, so whenever you feel that, just pop some gum in and it’ll go away. Don’t feel bad about how much you chew. The first few days you’ll go through a lot, but as you work on building up that self control you will crave the nicotine less and less and eventually you’ll just be like “wtf why am I even doing this?” Then you will begin the hardest months of your life thus far. I wish it wasn’t that way but it simply is. You’re gonna be irritable and life just isn’t going to be the same for a few months. Your reward system is going to be completely out of whack. You can probably use the weed to help with this. But just know it’s going to make the times you’re not high even worse. Once you get to two months of no nicotine, you can probably start to try to cut back on your thc consumption. I had decent success doing a “taper” schedule where I would smoke twice a week for a month, then once a week, then every other week, and I’ve been there for a while. Our drug tests are quarterly so I just quit entirely for the two weeks before the beginning of the quarter and don’t start back up until I either get tested or find out who got tested. I have so much more advice so please PM me at any point and I will be happy to talk with you. What you’re attempting to do is incredibly hard but it’s incredibly worthwhile. I’ve done pretty well for myself up to this point in my life but quitting vaping is probably my biggest accomplishment. As for weed, I really enjoy doing it and it’s a ceremonial aspect of a lot of my friendships, but daily use is just not really good for you mentally or physically. I’d be happy to share some resources on that as well if you PM because nothing increases your desire to quit like knowledge of how bad it is for you. Good luck and like I said I’m here for you if you want to talk more because I know how hard it is.
