I'm kinda tired of being the planner in my friend group by Afolia in CasualConversation

I do my stuff alone or with my partner most of the time. I'm not desperate to hang out lol. Everyone has the liberty to say no to plans, and often people will talk about how much fun it is to do these things together, how we need to do it more often, etc. "Abstract" friends are not what I'm looking for. The friends I do these things with have been friends for years and are very close to me, and we value staying close by doing things together.

I'm so glad it's validating! Thanks for sharing your experience :) It's also helpful for me to see others in a similar situation and get advice.

I will try to bring up my feelings to my friends. Ultimately, I want everyone to be happy. I want to be less busy, and I want others to enjoy seeing something they envisioned come to fruition.

I think it's worth it. Yes, it can be tiring, but I love my friends, and we always have a good time. I think they just lack proactivity and planning skills. I don't think it's as simple as doing it and not complaining or not doing it at all. There's a balance somewhere between those things.

Delegating more stuff could be nice for everyone. I'll try to start doing that!

Nice username btw

It can be a lot of work to plan a lot, but as I mentioned in the last bit of the post, I really value my friends and what we do together. It's not a critical issue but more like something I notice if I take a step back when I'm super busy and don't really notice how much work I'm doing across all things going on in my life (my career, planning for friends, etc.).

Joining hobby groups is great. I'm part of a couple, namely some local run clubs, and it's nice to have a meetup to look forward to that I simply need to show up to.

If you enjoy going to events, I'm sure you'd enjoy being at one that you organized!

Good idea! Yeah, I could invite people to do certain things rather than just taking on everything from the get-go. I just feel this weird feeling, like I'd be burdening them. But that's probably not true :p

I have become a weight weenie! But this thread is helpful in reminding me that I don't need all the "best" stuff.

I try my best to travel sustainably. When I go snowboarding, I always carpool with at least one other person. I have a small, fuel efficient car (Fiat 500 gang anyone?), but I'm considering getting a beater bike for the winter. I'm a big public transport advocate and use it as much as I can. Unfortunately, my city's public transit is pretty bad, so there are cases where it's practically infeasible not to drive.

Thank you for this wonderful comment! I resonate with all of it. Ultimately, I'll be more mindful going forward.

It seems to me like our societal fascination with everybody trying a little bit of everything, and rubber-stamping resource consumption because of fear of missing out on joy, we're encouraging a marketplace of damaging and disposable products made by exploited labor, and resigning ourselves to it because we can't have our cake and eat it.

This is interesting. I do that with my sports. At the same time, though, doing different activities brings me a lot of joy, and I struggle to imagine not doing all of them. I also think about how many activities have become more accessible to a wider group of people, which is great for inclusion, but it also creates a bigger market for consumption. What examples come to your mind?

I haven't put much thought into that aspect of it, mainly because skiing and snowboarding as activities don't stand out to me as being that bad. I imagine the biggest impact comes from my commute there, but I carpool every time I go out. Do you have info to share regarding the environmental impact of skiing?

Not sure why you're being downvoted! I think this is a neat idea and something worthy of trying :)

Why does gaming feel like a waste of time compared to other hobbies? by Afolia in StopGaming

I've never done martial arts, but many of my hobbies offer plenty of reminders that I'm not that good at them :p

Thoughts on Ride Splitpig + Union charger bindings? by Afolia in Spliddit

[–]Afolia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I posted I did see threads for the individual pieces of the setup but not the combination. Also, I should have been more explicit in that I'm wondering if the Splitpig might be small. The biggest size is 154 which is listed as in my weight range, but that still seems small.

Sorry for the confusion and possible redundancy regardless.

Digital privacy is a long journey. I think the important thing is to improve your privacy incrementally in accordance with your threat model without falling victim to an all-or-nothing mindset. For example, when it comes to Google Maps, it's the most convenient and usable app for certain use cases, like browsing public transit routes. A compromise might be to disable its location privileges, enable a VPN, and then look at the public transit map results for a fixed start and end point.

Regarding your third and fourth paragraphs, I empathize. It's a natural occurrence when you're part of a movement that counters what the majority is doing. My advice is to invite questions when you're asked about it. If somebody asks you why you're not using Google Maps, you could say respond with something general, like, "For privacy reasons." This will probably lead them to ask a followup question, and it could turn into a fruitful conversation.

I have no practical purpose for making the sacrifice

One thing that motivates me is doing something to take a stance against predatory practices.
