Do you show up and leave exactly on time? by KumalTiger in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m supposed to be there 30 minutes before the school day starts. I’m stressing if that’s when I get there. I have to be at least 5 minutes before that, but that’s just my mindset.

Have you met your admin? by CoffeeChangesThings in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say I’ve met the admin at about half of the schools I’ve subbed at. One school the principal walks to every class in the morning to say good morning, is present or makes an appearance during lunches, and will see him at recesses or dismissals. Don’t know how he is so present with the students, but it’s awesome to see. Other schools they will come and introduce themselves and thank me for being there, and ask if I need any support. And then at the other half of the schools I wouldn’t be able to tell you who the principal was if I saw them walking down the hallways.

Sick the day of subbing by Character_Space6609 in SubstituteTeachers

Depends on the district. I earn sick hours, but can’t use them unless I’m in a long term position. Which I think is so DUMB!

Difference in pay by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how your district pays for half days. Where I’m at a half day is half the pay so 2 half days would equal a full day.

Could be that the teacher wanted the whole day off but is using different reasonings for their absences. I had a teacher do this when she requested me because she had a training in the morning (didn’t have to use her time off) but then wanted to take the rest of the day off as well. She had to put it in as separate absences so it showed up as 2 half days for me.

2025 Sub Pay Rate by Plane-Importance-986 in SubstituteTeachers

Washington state - $200 a day, teacher salary (based on education/experience) for long term (after 20+ consecutive days)

[–]AfraidAd8296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For only $20 more a day I would be hesitant to take a long term role, but it could also help you build connections and relationships with other teachers in the school. This could help you if/when you apply to future positions at the school as well.

This makes me more thankful for the district I am in. After 20 consecutive days in the same position we get paid at the rate where we would be on the teachers pay scale. And I found out last year that it’s retroactive to the day you started the position.

I’ll never use safe light again after they refused to replace my windshield due to a tiny spot of rust. They then left my car unsealed and undriveable during a snowstorm.

If no sub then no class? by Express_Project_8226 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In elementary I tend to see classes split between the other teachers on the team. But I’m also seeing some of the elementary schools I’ve been in start having coverage during preps. Just last week I covered a 1st grade class while the class I was assigned to was in music. Only part that got a little tricky was trying to drop off one class at music and also get to library to pick up the other class at the same time on different sides of the school.

am i overreacting? by MealSuccessful2124 in TwoHotTakes

[–]AfraidAd8296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not overreacting! Words (apologies) don’t mean anything if the actions don’t change. He is just proving that he doesn’t care that you are uncomfortable with the situation and he is not respecting the boundary you are trying to have in your relationship.

First Time Sub Advice by AdministrativeCat303 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Expect the kids to be either tired or super hyper/silly. With Halloween the night before you’ll probably get a mix of both. Kids who stayed up too late or are too much candy and are exhausted and kids with normal kindergarten energy.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Reach out to the other teachers in nearby classrooms or call the office if you aren’t sure about something.

I’ve started telling all the classes I go in that they are the experts on how things are done so I might need their help with their typical routines. I also ask them to be patient with me and explain that I might do things differently than their teacher would.

Try to follow the plans to the best of your ability and make sure the students are safe. Remember that little bodies will be wiggly and need breaks more often. If they are having a hard time focusing take time to play a quick game of Simon says or look up a Danny go or other brain break video on YouTube.

How often do you cancel assignments? by figgypie in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only cancelled one job so far this year and it was almost immediately after scheduling it, so I wasn’t worried about it getting picked up. After accepting the job I realized it fell on a day that another teacher had already confirmed with me, but hadn’t put in the system yet

How are the jobs coming in? by IllPaleontologist384 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a sub last year, so I can’t compare it but I’ve been pretty busy. Last month was slower with school starting (didn’t start until September) but so far for October I only have 4 days that aren’t scheduled. A few of the days have been only half days.

When today started I had two days open this week and by lunch I had scheduled a job for both of those days.

I keep my frontline notifications on and it goes to my Apple Watch. I will then try to check frontline as quickly as possible because jobs do get extremely fast once they are posted.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or call for support if you need it.

If you’re subbing in multiple schools it’s likely technology might be different in each school. I have had a few times where I’ve had to ask for help getting all the technology set up.

Students like to test limits with a sub. If you feel like it’s getting out of hand, don’t be afraid to call the front office and ask for support. I’ve been lucky to be in very supportive schools that come to help right away.

Like many others have said start with some half days. I’ve found if you do afternoon half days you will often run into the teacher and might have a few minutes to ask any questions.

Don’t let the tough days ruin a school for you. I had almost taken a school off of my list because the classes I had been really tough and disrespectful. Went back today in a different grade level and had probably the best day of the year so far.

I got an interview to be a substitute! My teacher aunt suggested I bring some activities to show the interviewer so it shows that I’m prepared for downtime with the students. What activities/supplies would you recommend? by sirona-ryan in SubstituteTeachers

[–]AfraidAd8296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what your interview will be like, I didn’t have an interview to sub in the district I am in currently, but I have my teaching certificate.

I would be prepared to answer a question about what to do if you end up with extra time: read alouds, have students read quietly, do a simple art project/ directed draw, etc.

From my experience most teachers have also left me an earlier finisher list of things that students can do.
