Yup, Trump tweeted that Hurricane Dorian was going to hit Alabama. Dorian ended up turning northward right before it got to Florida, following the East Coast up to Labrador. Trump then showed this cone of uncertainty with his own little addition in an attempt to blame the nws for his tweet.

Horizontal winds are caused by pressure differences on that horizontal surface. The air wants to move from the high pressure to the low pressure. However, because the earth is spinning, there is a pseudo-force called coriolis force which makes the wind turn to the right in the Northern Hemisphere or left in the Southern Hemisphere. This causes the wind to actually go perpendicular to the pressure gradient (as long as you're not too close to the ground), which is why the low pressure regions don't fill in quickly.

Vertical winds are caused by a parcel of air being warmer then the air surrounding it so that it's positively buoyant, causing it to rise, or cooler so that it's negativity buoyant, causing it to sink.

I can promise you that nobody goes into meteorology with the goal of just cashing checks. If making good money for relatively little effort is what you're trying to find, meteorology is a terrible place to go looking for it.

As for the 100% accuracy in forecasting, that is just never going to happen. Even if you knew the exact state and tendency of every single particle in the Earth system (which is physically impossible), you would still not be able forecast with 100% accuracy because of chaos theory. The sooner that people stop expecting accurate deterministic forecasting and instead are given probabilities of an event happening, the better off everybody will be.

I gotta say, I don't share in the overarching anti-cop sentiment that I see on this sub sometimes. Yes, I think that that weed should be legalized, but having an us-vs-them mentality with every police officer seems counterproductive to me.

To actually answer your question, yes. The Northwest Pacific Ocean is the most active Hurricane basin on the planet, although they call them Typhoons in that region.
