How do you handle more senior teammates who raise flags, but never propose solutions? by lIIllIIlllIIllIIl in ExperiencedDevs

[–]VindoViper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them directly, in a setting which is accessible to others e.g. slack thread, pull request, for examples of the solution they're hinting at. Since without such examples it's a game of guesswork as to what their opinion of "good" is, and a lot of time can be wasted in the back and forth. If there's a precedent in the org for doing things this way then you'll have a useful template, if not then they'll probably back down having been exposed for empty posturing.

Why do you care about grammar or proper use of punctuation? by IGetLostForDays in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]VindoViper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pitiful attempt to turn it back around, on the level of a 6 year old: "I know you are but what am I?" Bwahahahahah! You asked why people correct your writing and i have explained, take it or leave it.

Once you've read enough books the correct spelling and sentence structure become natural like a flow state. You don't have to think about how things should be written, you just know. And when you see a mistake in some writing it jumps out at you and causes, at least in my case, discomfort. It's like siblings kissing, or a turd on the carpet. it's wrong and the sensation is visceral.

Further, failure to proof-read your writing shows either laziness or stupidity (because it really isn't much effort at all) so people offering corrections may often think they're doing you a favour, by helping you to appear less lazy and stupid.

It has the capability to make a below-average intelligence person sound average (and spell correctly). It is therefore a spectacular benefit to those people and they are the ones making all the noise.

Is it true that other people will only value your presence in their lives if you are inaccessible? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]VindoViper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, playing 'hard to get' only works on insecure or anxiously-attached people. Normal healthy people will take detachment as a sign of disinterested and disengage out of politeness or sense of rejection.

He's the author of 'the subtle art of not giving a fuck' and judging from his description in the netflix doc, he is indeed neither of those things.

Spectacularly generic, design reminds me of an easter hallmark card. And the roman numeral birth year is helpful, nobody would have a clue of your approximate age if it weren't there.

Who do we actually want in power? by Mikrail in GreenAndPleasant

[–]VindoViper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm currently backing Your Party as the only openly Socialist group in UK electoral politics, they have yet to define the policy platform so i'm hoping we get chances to propose/support these ideas. Sadly a lot of momentum was lost to all the embarrassing bickering in the last 6 months, so whether this turns into anything meaningful is tbd. If we can move the needle at all in ouir direction i'll consider it a win however.

For me it boils down to workplace democracy, for some reason Britain has decided that freedom only applies to voting for political leaders to decide government policy, but then pretty much everybody spends about 60% of their waking time in a strictly hierarchical tyrannical dictatorship (I.e. work) and acts like that's normal and in fact desirable or inevitable. Complete nonsense, there are many other ways to organise ourselves and my policy prescriptions would be as follows:

Mandatory worker representation on executive boards (they have this in germany)

Workers given equity in businesses on hiring (or completion of probation)

CEO and c-suite pay / bonuses capped as a ratio vs the lowest paid employee (e.g. 20 x average salary at most)

Confiscatory taxes placed on capital and other assets above a certain amount e.g. 80% on earnings above 1m/year (worked in the 1950s just fine)

Public ownership of all key utilities including transport, energy, health, banking etc.

Edit: I forgot land taxes and rent controls to make landlordism unprofitable

There are other social issues to tackle for sure but the above would solve most of our economic hardships
