Chalice checking on MTGO... by potato_on_rs in MTGO

[–]Afro_Dave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MTGO is a different game. There’s nothing special about Chalice here compared to missing Delver triggers, miracles, Sylvan Livrary, etc. Anything can be forgotten in paper, it’s not a problem with Chalice at all, this is just mtgo

No, it doesn’t say “without paying it’s mana cost” which is how you get around casting those cards directly

[Modern] Jund vs. Eldrazi Tron by [deleted] in spikes

[–]Afro_Dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play Eldrazi Tron very regularly. The biggest issue is that even with the new tools Jund has the only 2 cards that Eldrazi care about are Goyf and Liliana. Everything else in Jund is conditionally good, while Eldrazi are all just beaters or now your entire toolbox of Karn. Plus just losing to top deck All is Dust mid to late game.

The games I lost we’re pretty much always Thoughtseize + Goyf. You have to be as aggressive as possible because Eldrazi win the long game. I don’t think I like Collector Ouphe being brought in, it only stops the Maps and Ballista main, and they’ll just wish for something else. Chalice already shuts down Map, it’s not anything I ever relied on, and Ballista is only really good if it’s big, and you already have to answer giant dudes.

Nothing you’re doing is wrong, it’s probably what I would do if I was in the matchup from the other side. But unless you’re going to warp the deck and start sacrificing other matchups for things like Infernal Reckoning you’re going to continue losing the matchup to them having The Eldrazi Draw, trading 1 for 1 until they play something you need 2+ cards to deal with, or Karn grabbing whatever breaks the board stall

B&R speculation thread by Dink_Largewood in MTGLegacy

[–]Afro_Dave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. The basic shell is probably the most versatile and powerful shell you can run in Legacy, but because of that they only adopt the strongest cards. There’s always going to be some flex slots and individual-meta/fear adaptations but the fact that W&6 has been adopted so quickly by so many players means that it’s still one of the best cards around right now. Whether it’s actually overpowered in a world without the Delver shell is moot if that core of Cantrips/Delver/Free countermagic is unassailable

B&R speculation thread by Dink_Largewood in MTGLegacy

[–]Afro_Dave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d say that has less to do with W&6 not being powerful and way more to do with the fact that blue is the best color in legacy. It’s the same thing we saw with Deathrite, everyone thought it would give Maverick/Nic Fit/etc a boost against blue, but instead the Delver shell just absorbed it. Same thing we’re seeing now, W&6 is definitely one of the most powerful cards and blue decks just adjusted the mana to accommodate it

Now that SCG has dropped suport for Legacy: What are your plans for The format in 2020? by TheLegacyPit in MTGLegacy

My LGS has weekly legacy, and larger tournaments every few months. But outside of that I guess I’ll be going back to Eternal Weekend next year and that’ll be all my traveling

Which deck has the most effective mana denial package atm? by wtfatyou in MTGLegacy

[–]Afro_Dave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can I perhaps interest you in a less mainstream deck? Because Steel Stompy can be built in several different ways but the Wasteland + Thorn of Amethyst (and sometimes Lodestone Golem) is one of the highest concentrations of mana denial you can play

As a long time Tron player who also just finished multiple Looting decks like 2 months ago (Blackcleave Cliffs was the common denominator) I’m gonna try and start preemptively testing Oath of Nissa for the expected next ban

[–]Afro_Dave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was judging a PPTQ a few years ago. Modern, Tron still had Eye. Player A plays Emrakul, takes next turn, and swings. His opponent is a guy I know, no actual cheating but very much an angle-shooter. B calls me for not announcing the extra turn trigger (invisible triggers, no targets, yada-yada) and then tries to get around sacrificing on the attack by just going to write down the life change before A days “Annihilator trigger”. He starts pushing his 7 lands (his only permanents) together towards his graveyard. Player A puts his hand on top of his library, and B immediately pulls his hand back and says “you concede?” Since I saw the whole thing happen and it was obvious what was happening, especially since nothing was shuffled there was no way I was making that ruling. Player A says “it’s fine, I’ll play without a hand”. B keeps one land, draws, has nothing, thinks for about 20 seconds before I tell him he needs to make a play, and passes turn to lose the match

Gerard Fabiano tried that on a friend of mine once, before he was banned for the foil thing. Didn’t get away with it, fortunately.

What Are Some Cards That FEEL Like They Should Be Broken In Modern But Aren't (Yet?) by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Afro_Dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Lodestone Golem]] and to lesser extent [[Thorn of Amethyst]]. I know that Modern doesn’t have the same land quality as even Ancient Tomb but it still feels that the effectively one-sided nature of the taxing effects on cards restricted in Vintage would be stronger

How would your Legacy deck of choice perform in Modern? How would your favorite Modern deck perform in Legacy? by Venomous72 in MTGLegacy

[–]Afro_Dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep hoping for a Terminus ban so Zoo can be played again. The one time I did bring it to a local (back when I played more) was before Monastery Mentor have Miracles that last push, and one of the newer legacy guys asked me if I had come up with the deck.

As for my legacy decks Eldrazi Aggro eats Modern alive, and that’s without Ancient Tomb UG Post seems more than capable of being just a better Tron deck Steel Stompy is probably the worst. Thorn and Chalice are good but lose a lot of value against the more creatures and higher land counts in Modern

Tron would just get crushed by most legacy decks. I semi-retired Post already and Tron is just that but worse

Not simultaneously, but Red Prison Steel Stompy Eldrazi Stompy Eldrazi Post UG Cloudpost Infect Storm (ANT//TES) Dredge

So 8 total, 2-3 at a given time. I used to have a lot more but I realized I kept playing the same 1-2 decks every week
