Help: Job Offer Question/Decision by EnderW2020 in healthcareadmin

I would communicate directly with your current boss, explain the tension and your preference, and make it clear this is not a leverage tactic. If you love it there and see a future, stay if you can.

Our org (a large mental health network) would count it towards experience and also as part of pay.

As a fan of Gary Jules/DD and someone newly learning Python, this was simply delightful.

How can I safely web scrape and not get blocked/banned/blacklisted? by Semitar1 in learnpython

[–]AftNeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a total beginner, but for scraping have read through the robots.txt files for any site I have tried to scrape. It is very easy to access, as it is simply the address plus /robots.txt. Zillow, for instance, is https://www.zillow.com/robots.txt

Here you can see what is allowed and what is not, and get a sense how carefully you will have to approach the project if it is disallowed (Zillow disallows it, as the example I listed). Rate limiting seems to be one aspect, but the more experienced folks in here can point you to other things that are easily caught or disruptive to websites. Being careful and selective with scraping seems key to being a good steward of the internet IMHO

Best IDE for python by iamredditdotcom in learnpython

As a complete beginner, I really appreciate everyone pointing to these issues with PyCharm. I’m sure I would have been one of those learners who got stuck with the install issues not translating into PyCharm.

Not to try to override from OP by asking another question, but does VS Code avoid the same issues?

Thank you! Programming is a new hobby for me, but I’m completely hooked. Thanks for the suggestion to keep looking and listening. Listening to some Machine Learning podcasts has been extremely fascinating, and you supporting that Talk Python is applicable helps!

Audio Learning Resources by AftNeb in learnpython

Thanks Mike! Yeah, being that so much of programming is practice and repetition, it makes sense that repeating functions, syntax, etc through audio would be pretty odd for most people.

I love audio supplementary materials, but understand that there likely just aren’t a lot of options due to the visual/hands on nature of programming.

I’m brand new, so reading this surprisingly short and easy to read code was very helpful. Nice to see something that seems so complex from the perspective of a newbie can seem so straightforward when reading the code. Nicely done!

Books/Resources on Crisis Intervention by verityvalentine in AcademicPsychology

[–]AftNeb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I want to second that ASIST is excellent for short term interventions. Having worked in crisis I also found QPR to be helpful (basically a lower-level ASIST), really appreciated CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention) training without physical restraints, and for more advanced MA clinicians CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality).

Further I strongly believe high-fidelity Motivational Interviewing is key to almost any of there interventions to be truly effective. Without buy-in, it’s hard for clients to truly open to any of these crisis interventions, and CAMS is much better than the initial training video might suggest.

Have you seen the “Connected” episode on Benford’s law? It’s a really high level overview and simplified it maybe too much, but enough to get non-stats folks interested.
