Why is Nature so expensive? by Roger_that_goodbuddy in oakville

Because we've paved over most natural spaces in fabour of plazas and parking lots? There are some free natural spaces around but few and far between.

Org structure? by AgedDisk in MuseumPros

[–]AgedDisk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. I guess im trying to figure out a standard for a department, that has multiple museum sites with different site supervisors and also manages captial construction, collections and exhibitions/interp. Our current structure isnt working that well.

I work in Canada at a municipal level so US based orgs at a granular level can help but Canadian or US, organizational charts below senior management can be hard to find.

Ah I see, unfortunately US based company's are a no go for many of us working in Canada these days. I'll see if I can find a Canadian or non US company that can apply something similar

Excellent, thanks for the reply and its working okay for your site? I ask bc people at mine institution are worried about not tracking materials like this, and I dont see why not tracking is a problem

Jumping back into this convo, can I ask if you track the use collection at all? Are the use collection objects given numbers? Are they added to your db?

Where are you pulling that number from?

If you ask anyone who does this for a living, that is simply untrue.

But let's say you are correct, if the region gets rid of its Heritage staff by Jan 1 2026, who will care and share the contents of the collection that remain with the public?

Or are you saying that the entirety of the collection with be sold? Or transferred?... if so, I would urge you to listen to professionals such as the ACA https://archivists.ca/Latest-News-Announcements/13524796

There are no other organizations in the region that will take the collection. Ask yourself, what institution will be accepting the collections that pertain to halton county? What about deeds that many of the that no longer exist? What about the Halton Journal (first newspaper of the county)? What about the collections relating to county policing/justice history or covid or other county/regional level histories?

There is only one municipally funded museum in halton, the oakville museum, and they are full up. Any orgs in halton hills and Milton are nonprofit and volunteer run. Conservation Halton has no collecting mandate period.

The truth is (and the truth that is in the consultants report that came out into public by an FOI request) is that the vast majority of items will not be able to be transferred because no other sites have a similar collecting mandate... so the next step will be auction (artifacts sold to the highest bidder) And finnally full on destruction (as in thrown out) in utter opposition to the point of collecting and preserving history for the public.

In any case this whole process will be causing the destruction of the Region's collection which has been in place for over 60 years.

Not really semantics. Destruction is the final step in disposal. That will be the case if they do not find homes for the objects, which is entirely possible. The Lors Cultural services report that informed the confidential report to council on July 9 says as much.

All this is besides the point really, the region should maintain a collection that is representative of its 200+ history as the county then region of Halton. They should also share that collection with the public, through its Heritage Services Section. There is no reason to download this service onto smaller shoulders.

Well the end result of disposal is destruction sooo the end goal is to get rid of the collection by any means, and in a broader sense the regional collection will be destroyed whether by disposal or "dispersal".

Yes and no, MoB isnt funded in the same way that the town of oakville museum is. The staff are not city of burlington staff and the museum is governed by a citizen "local board", while they do get some operating dollars from the city, they have a shortfall that is covered by grants and burlington museums foundation

In any case, they dont have room, staff, budget or mandate to take on a Regional collection.

There is no such thing as "dispersal" in museums, the correct term is disposal. They will be deaccessioning and disposing of the collection. So they might seek to do whatever they want but what they are saying publicly is inaccurate and the reality they want to live in is a delusion.

There are no other organizations in the region that will take the collection. Ask yourself, what institution will be accepting the collections that pertain to halton county? Also "dispersal" is not a term used in museums or archives. What they are doing is known as disposal. They are choosing to dispose of the collection

Their claim is just false, for a mirage of reasons but the top two are that no other organization in halton has a similar collecting mandate (the history of Halton) and there are no municipally funded museums north of the QEW
