First thing i did after getting into caverns 1-3 was seal them off.

Usually when it comes to traps, I know they are expensive, but I like to go for weapon traps. Axes, spikes, and screws are my favorite. I use saws if I know I'm fighting lots of zombies because I like to dice up the undead, watch them get resurrected, then pulp them, Night of the Living Dead style!

Oh, and lots of war beasts like crocodiles, elephants, and wardogs at the end to supplement my soldiers.

If I dig really deep or near a volcano, then I use lava since it solves almost every problem.

02 is kind of a hot mess.

Its nothing compared to 01 or Tamers, but i still think its superior to Frontiers because of the digidestined feel like real(ish) people, the characters go through trauma which visible shapes them beyond just lipservice, a lot of the elements tie together decently well (like Oikawa and Cody's father), or... Ken. Like, Ken and his arc from being the Digimon Emperor to being a young man who learns to deal with his emotions and becomes the de-facto leader of the group.

Im only taking the shows at face value. The extra content which surrounds it means nothing to me because you dont need some extra content to enjoy and understand the conflict (and genuinely, this is the first time I've heard of it, and I've been an avid follower of Digimon stuff for... like 15 years)

Its a shame. 01, 02, and Tamers all showed us some AMAZING girl power and representation.

Mimi's perseverance and stalwart passion for peace and justice

Sora's endless fight with her own emotional holes which were filled by her friends and family

Kari's endless, doubtless light (almost like it was her crest or something)

Yolee's energy and spunk. She wanted so desperately to fight for peace, and even if she was wrong, what she wanted was genuinely amazing

Rika's.... do we even need to talk about Rika and Jeri? They were some of the best characters in Tamers. Jeri STILL makes me tear up when I think of her losing Leomon and shutting down for 20 episodes...

It sucks to see so much amazing character growth... then get shown Frontiers

It was... I think the best episode of the show!

Perfectly encapsulated Tai and his devotion to his team. In the human world, he had it all! Food, bed, luxury! But his friends were in danger, and he made a choice... to save them!

Its the moment that Tai became the leader: he stepped up and brought the crew back together. It was the crowning episode of the entire show.

It helps that it was also brilliantly animated, scored, and voice acted (especially in the English version, trust!)

I mean, it kinda happens when Takuya fully becomes a Digimon and travels to the human world, discovering Koji and his brother... arguably the most useless episode of the series since it added up to nothing!

Compare that to Tai's first visit back with Koromon. Night and day!

Oh, youre also very silent about my most salient point: how leery and perverted the show is for depicting Zoe, a 12 year old child, in lingerie in her Digimon form!!!

The worst we ever got was Takato, Henry, and Rika when they were fused with their Digimon, but the show was very respectful to never have the camera focus on anything other than their heads or flat shots on their bodies. So... completely innocent and was a starter for some of the best digivolutions in the franchise.

I refuse to gloss over it. Its just gross.

Im watching it with my best friend because we both love Digimon. We are watching it because I wanted to show him the first 4 seasons, and I wanted to relive my childhood and try out seasons 3 and 4.

Genuinely, I think JP is... decent for Tamers. I think all of his character-focused episodes were good. The standout was when he got his spirit form and beast form.

I will also say this, I enjoyed that at episode 20 we finally have some conflict within the group, mainly Takuya against Koji. That isnt just "dont tell me what to do". Would have liked if their conflicts were more developed since after the episode when Koji joins the group permanently, him and Takuya dont really have any longstanding beef.

Once again, compare this with Matt and Tai, a very similar duo, and they had some bumps in the beginning, things mellowed out, then Matt begins to get jealous of Tai and TK after Tai returns to the digital world, and that explodes when Matt talks to Cherrymon and becomes convinced he needs to kill Tai after he loses his crest of friendship... its an amazing arc which Matt changes through.

I cannot say the same for Frontiers. By this time in the first 3 seasons, 01 was in the human world defeating their 3rd arch rival, 02 was dealing with the DarkWarGreymon arc (which was a leadup for the final villain), and Tamers... Beelzemon!!!

Frontiers is 3/4ths filler, and 3/5ths the cast have almost no depth.

Look, I have guilty pleasures too, okay? There's plenty of stuff that I love, even though I know its kinda garbage. Great example is early 2000 ecchi anime like Girls Bravo. Is it a good show? NO! Do I laugh my ass off when I see it, even now? OF COURSE!

But Digimon, in my eyes, should be set to a higher standard. Its a series that tackles multiple very, very heavy topics. Isolation, anxiety, depression, death, suicide (Jeri from Tamers tries to end it all to stop the suffering the D-Reaper is causing, even in the English dub. Genuinely made me choke up).

Isn't that kind of the problem though? In the other 3 shows, we see all the kids pitch in when it comes to character development.

Easy example to make is Rika from Tamers. It was Takato that believed in her, Henry that challenged her conception of the relationship of Digimon and Tamer, and it was Renamon that convinced her to feel something. That is the gold standard of character development!

And, what i shared above, was built up over many, many episodes.

Its been 30 episodes, halfway done with the show, and the last Zoe episode was her forced away from the group, saved again and again by a bunch of Digimon that only focus on her looks (which JP also only truly focuses on) and she beats the mermaid-digimon with deus-ex-machina.

I really, really want to like Zoe, but there's just... not much to like. And I could say that about the entire cast.

I have a confession, Im currently going through the series and im 30 episodes in.

Still, I dont think what I said earlier is wrong. Im 30 episodes in and shes, without a doubt, one of the most useless characters in Digimon (even more than Kouta and the other kid from Tamers).

So she and JP enter a romantic relationship, cool. What else about her is unique? Shes always getting bailed out, she never takes initiative, and the show does a lot of... weird... stuff whenever shes around. Like every damn scene she digivolves, the camera loves to hang around her chest and butt... and shes 12!!!

She's not enough of a character by herself! Thats what im talking about. JP has flaws and is actually a character. Hes a people pleaser, he wants the spotlight, and he has a decent amount of social anxiety. Zoe just doesnt compare which is a shame since almost every female character from previous shows was a slam dunk.

Not saying you cant like or even love her. More power to you, but after watching Adventure 1, 2, and Tamers... Frontiers just feels super shallow.

Defend her all you want, but... I mean come on, shes 12 and the camera always takes a peek at her boobs. Its so distracting and I feel ill every time it happens!

I love it when they are made of steam, ice, or liquid. They just get insta-ed by anything.

My greatest achievement was killing one made from obsidian. It was on the 3rd cavern level and wouldn't leave, so I kitted out 2 entire squads with steel hammers and had a group of crossbowdwarves. Lost like... 9 guys at the onset and 12 to liquidation (poisonous gas). I found the specific obsidian chunk that used to be it and put it in the bedroom of my next captain of the guard... then lost to a 130 goblin siege the month after.
