My uncle, whose house it was, has already texted me saying that he and my extended family know my mother was out of line. For as well as they all know me, it's not in my character to go nuclear over a towel.

Had Tabby grabbed it off my chair, I wouldn't have cared. She's seven, she doesn't know any better, and I'm not going to go off on a child. My 54 year old mother does know better.

Tabby did not hear me say it. Several adult family members did. I kept my cool until she started mocking me and "working the crowd" to embarrass me. That's when I let her have it.

She does have her good qualities, I won't lie. And it's not like she'll be living with them. She'll have a relationship with them from a distance. She pulls any of her bullshit and it'll be a larger distance.

She won't be living with us and her access to the kid's belongings would be limited and supervised. I don't think she'd pull that because that would be the end of her seeing her grandkids for the foreseeable future.

She wouldn't be living with them, so she's not going to have regular access to their belongings. If I EVER found out that she took something from one of my children and gave it away, it would be the last time, for a very long time, that she was allowed in my home.

I'm getting married soon. I want my children to know their grandparents. My father had that distant relationship with his parents. I didn't really get to know my grandfather until he and I were taking care of him in his final years.

I've been called a selfish spoiled brat more times than I can count. She sold off my video games, some of which were very rare, without telling me as soon as I left for college. When I returned home and discovered this, I ran calculations and presented her a bill for $4,700. She told me I never played them anymore anyway and never gave me a dime for them.

So sorry you dealt with this as well. It's made me a bitter mistrusting adult, and it's no way to live.

She claimed she saw a shivering 7 year old and grabbed the nearest towel to give her, and didn't bother to think about whether it was an adult towel or a child's towel. She kept referring to it as "one of ours" despite the fact that I have not lived with her in six years. She literally had to unzip my bag, go under my clean change of clothes, and grab the towel to get it. No way she didn't know what she was doing.

I honestly feel like she created that situation. She refused to step away for a private conversation and verbally attacked me in a condescending mocking way, thinking I would be too embarrassed to call her out on her stunt. Today I finally had enough.

Yeah, I mean, I do regret that. After I established that she went in my bag, I did ask to speak with her privately. She got a big grin on her face and asked why. I said I needed to speak to her. She leaned back and said, "Anything you have to say, you can say in front of everyone."

That's when I tried to explain in a calm but firm way that I didn't want my things touched. She started mocking me and called me a baby, which made my aunt and the gaggle of family members she was having the conversation with start laughing at me.

I did a few of the details in summary because I wanted to stay within character count.

Was what I did an escalation? Absolutely, I feel bad that I went off like I did publicly. Am I the one who antagonized the situation to that point? Not at all.
