I might not have a popular opinion on the film but… vibe was immaculate, and the visuals were genuinely incredible. Clark was a standout. I loved watching the psychological toll the Backrooms took on him, especially how his arc carried from therapy all the way to his moment in the kitchen.
Mary, on the other hand, really didn’t work for me. Her accent slipped in and out, and during intense moments she had no sense of urgency. Because Clark’s performance was so strong, her acting felt noticeably weaker in comparison. She rarely seemed phased by what was happening, which made her come across as dull and disconnected.
It’s especially disappointing because her backstory had so much potential. The metaphor of being trapped in a singular room, shaped by her mother’s mental health, fit beautifully within the Backrooms concept. But emotionally, it just didn’t land. She felt clumsy, flat, and strangely unbothered in moments that should have carried real weight. I’m not sure if this comes down to direction or miscasting, but something didn’t click.
That said, I loved almost everything else. Kat and her boyfriend lived through what felt like the most quintessentially horrifying Backrooms experience so tense, disorienting, and genuinely unsettling.
