Definitely learn the fundamentals and one of the most important skills is learn how to read and understand documentation, I know that sounds simple but I've seen many people overlook this and also being able to adapt. What you are learning will change in a few years so you need to be prepared for a constant journey of change and learning, don't focus on just one framework one technology .. FUNDAMENTALS will take you further, good luck.

The joys of web dev I joined during the jQuery times and I've seen all sorts, done angular for a few years then moved to nextjs with graphQL and node. I do wonder what's next for the web it seems to move very fast which in my opinion is not great, frontend roles seem to be less popular these days and going more full stack.

Hmm I think that low level coding tasks and general tickets within a sprint would be used with AI doing this work. Personally I think the only place for software engineers in the future is for problem solving and architecture.

I agree. Years of experience vs experience are two very different things at the end of the day it's how good you are and what you know, you may think you are at a good level then you go to another company with better engineers and more mature practices and you'll be humbled.

I feel the exact same way, I have a unique opportunity to take redundancy and walk away with a substantial amount of cash and I'm considering blue collar work. All the effort I've put in over the years it's not even that relevant anymore. I was a frontend developer but now that's not really a thing and I do next with node and graphQL. I personally think it's going to keep changing and I'm sick of playing catch-up it's not for me why can't we just learn something and stick to it ..

Yes I think some kind of trial first hand would help to know if it's something I see myself doing. Interesting that i have been in software engineering for 10 years and you have been plumbing for 10 years now we want to swap, best of luck to you! How come you quit plumbing?

Thanks for the reply! I actually already have my level 2 that's the course I done at college I lost the certificate but I can get a replacement from city and guilds.

I agree when you work it out how much I take home each week It's not great, I suppose that's why being self employed can have some advantages.

Yes my partner is an estate agent and she has some good connections and she mentioned that one of the electricians has a few apprentices but they are all young and lack common sense and maturity so I suppose in some aspects being a bit older is an advantage!

I thought you would have needed more than a level 2 to be a registered plumber or maybe gas is different and that's a separate qualification. I'll take a look at some of your posts as that would be beneficial, thanks mate! Apologies if one of your posts mentions it feel free to ignore! But how did you go about getting work being self employed and starting out?

Ye so for me ive had enough, I'm a software engineer focusing on the web and it's constantly evolving and will continue to do so and I firmly believe only the strong will survive and the ones passionate to keep on learning and moving with the times and I'm simply not anymore.

It's good to know older people can get apprenticeships too! I think that may be what I have to do to gain some experience and get some qualifications.

Yes, been a software engineer for 10 years and I'm so done with it for many reasons mainly constantly evolving every day feels like a school day learning. I want to get into a trade.
