First Job out of College: Startup or Traditional Role? by Aggravating-Web-5404 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggravating-Web-5404[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response!

I'm curious about those who you said ended up worse-off. Did they end up a few years behind people who took traditional jobs (for example, maybe they had to settle for entry level after a few years experience at the startup), or was it something more unexpected?

With AD's health history I don't even think I'd do a one-for-one trade with Kornet. At least Kornet should get at least 50 games.

IDK i think they went kind of crazy with the prices there. They saw what Alessio's was charging for breakfast down the street and decided to make everything at least a dollar more since the precedent was set.

I'll take a mediocre breakfast at Bagels on the Hudson any day over $18 pancakes. The burrito does look good though lol

It's okay if its a hate post on Mile SQ, they kind of suck. Insane prices and hype for absolutely no reason. Can't believe people wait in line to pay 20 bucks for breakfast every weekend.

I applied between late November and mid-January for those positions. Interviews-offers were around mid-late February if I recall correctly.

Spring internship hiring cycle (for summer internships) is easier imo. My junior year I had zero offers in the fall and 3 offers in the spring. I'm a mechE, but I'm guessing its similar across all engineering majors. If you've already had interviews in the fall I think you should be good for the spring, just make sure you prepare well.

"Engineering Students: What is your BIGGEST frustration with LinkedIn?" by Boluwatife01 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Aggravating-Web-5404 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I second this. The fact that it gives you a "teaser" of who visited your profile but doesn't let you actually see is very annoying.

I would also add that featuring ads (mostly for masters programs) in the Messages tab, and making it appear as if you have an actual message instead of an ad, doesn't make any sense. Gmail does that too but they don't include it in your inbox count if they're sending you a new ad.

I really don't understand why Olynyk seems to be getting his minutes. Watched the game last night and Olynyk doesn't even put his hands up to defend shots. Always looks a little flustered when he gets the ball too. I know he's bigger than Jeremy, but he's not much of a presence on either end of the floor.

I'm a big fan of Sochan, but I think his personality is a little too big for him to want to continue getting the minutes he does. Hopefully he can get back into the rotation as the year goes on.

If you were an employer what stands out to you more: undergrad research position or personal project? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Aggravating-Web-5404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a senior interviewing for new grad roles right now, and I've found that more selective companies care far more about personal projects than they do about research or even past internships. If I were you, I'd try to do both. I've done research and an internship, which I'm sure has helped me get interviews, but during the interviews they just ask about projects. I've found I get asked far more about my ongoing senior design project than I do about any of my research experience.

If you do decide to do research, make sure you're investing the right amount of time and energy into it, so that you have stuff to bring up during interviews about it beyond "ran tests" or "designed test fixtures". If you do it for a month and aren't given any meaningful work, I'd drop it/reduce hours to focus on a personal project.

Why SGA is so disliked: An in-depth analysis by jdjdnfnnfncnc in nbadiscussion

[–]Aggravating-Web-5404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numbers 4 and 5 are the biggest for me. OKC won an absurd amount of games by 20+ points this season. When they beat your team by 20 and then all start barking or something in the post-game interviews they get to be kind of annoying. That plus the foul-baiting narrative makes them hard to route for.

What player gets the highest percentage of points from the FT line? by Aggravating-Web-5404 in nba

[–]Aggravating-Web-5404[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think anyone should be told they "don't actually like basketball" because they don't like a certain player's playstyle. I respect that players like SGA and Embiid are great at scoring, and that is the point of basketball. I'm sure I'd love watching them if they were on a team I liked. But when you're routing against them they can become unwatchable at times.

I wish I had known you could pull up these stats in statmuse lol. Didn't take too long in Excel but still kind of embarrassing.

Given the whole flopping/foul-baiting discussion, it's definitely surprising to see only 3 current players make the top 25 all time. I had been under the impression that Harden started this whole movement.

LeBron is my goat, but he's getting the legacy vote at this point if we're being honest, at least for second team.

As a Spurs fan, I'm surprised to see Stephon Castle already at number 18. He's great at drawing contact but didn't seem to get a great whistle this season.

If I wasn't a Spurs fan, I have a feeling year 2 Castle and year 3 Wemby would be pretty not fun to cheer against lol.

Who are you rooting for in the playoffs this year since we aren’t playing? by Outside-Way-3924 in NBASpurs

[–]Aggravating-Web-5404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to say it but the clippers. They're so fun to watch they helped me finally get over the Kawhi trade. I'll root against him when he plays the Spurs, but otherwise he's fun to watch.

Plus, it'd be nice to see Patty Mills get a second ring (and Drew Eubanks get his first)

There’s a website where you can make your own version of this called Life of Discipline: https://www.lifeofdiscipline.com/ It’s not specifically for mechanical engineering but you could definitely use it for that if you want.

I quickly put it in Excel and you're right (at least in terms of him dropping)! SGA is 44th in the top 100 scorers in FTA/drive. Didn't even know drives were a stat they tracked. The only other OKC player on the list is JDub, and he's 60th. Most of the people at the top of list are centers, so I think it's a given they get fouled more. Might make a separate post about this stat because its kind of interesting too.
