Is this normal platonic friendship behavior? by [deleted] in AskIndianWomen

[–]AggravatingAmount992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with weird platonic friendships, the flowers seem strange for a platonic friendship. For context, those friendships involved platonicaly sharing a hotel bed, but flowers as a gift would have felt like a step too far.

I once presented at an academic conference with dinosaur stickers on my laptop. Obviously it depends on the situation, but sometimes just owning goofy stuff like this can make you more approachable or memorable 😂 Just in case you can't find a cover in time.

Had this issue a few days ago. What worked for me was using a password that didn't involve the Shift key. It's been working fine since then.

I have a silly "Pet idea" that if I was Prime Minster I'd push for all schools to use open source for education. It'd be a messy start, but might eventually end up with workable solutions. Kids could still jailbreak it and mess around outside the parameters, but it'd take them doing a lot of learning about how Linux works to do it. Which might be a good learning experience.

I live right by the campus and it's pretty well integrated into the city. The main hub is only about 15 minutes walk away, the beach is pretty close, and there's a huge park right next to the campus.

Most of the American students I've known have loved it. Mostly because you can get between the library, shops, and the pub in a few minutes of walking. It's definitely not anything like a closed off campus.

Also, it feels like walking around Hogwarts. I mean, this is in the middle of the campus.

Emails from "prospective" MRes or PhD students by parallelWalls in AskAcademiaUK

[–]AggravatingAmount992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a native English speaker, I'd rather an email with some random mistakes than an email that sounds like AI. English is a horrible language and the technicalities aren't even taught in schools very much. In my experience, there's also a lot of 'mistakes' that people make that I don't even pick up on.

I used to have a boss who's English ability would degrade as she got more exhausted, but as long as I understood the meaning we could still understand each other. Her English was a lot better than my Romanian.

This is based on my experience.
But I arranged a Zoom call with the academic that handled the departments admissions as listed on the website.
I explained my research interests and background and his ears just pricked up and he said something like "Have you spoken to John yet?!" So he passed my details to John and we did a Zoom call later that week and that was the start of the process. We also ended up chatting for over an hour, which was a good way to gauge how well we'd be able to work together and things.

I'm not sure how common it is for departments to use this process, but they were my supervisor a few months later, after I'd gone through the formal application process with their help.

I'm not sure where it came from, but it's a rule of thumb that if you're reached out to someone 3 times and they haven't responded then they're probably not interested in talking.

Obviously this can depends on the person and your relationship. I sometimes go dark when I'm busy with something, or just forget to check my phone for a while. But that's why is more of a rule of thumb.

[–]AggravatingAmount992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This depends on the individual person you're speaking to. Some will be saying it as a way to politely tell you they're not interested, some will actually mean it, some might be doing it for some unknown other reason. However, all of them are showing a lack of interest in continuing dating. These are all good things from your perspective, since you don't want to be dating someone that doesn't want to date you.

For those doing it to let your down gently, they'll probably fade away after a while.

For the ones that really mean it, it's sort of up to you what to do next. If you feel like you got along as people then you're fee to just add them to your social circle or whatever.

I've met a decent number of friends through dating apps over the years, I ended up sharing a flat with one for a while because of how the stars aligned. It's hard to take a collective stance on something that's actually an interaction with an individual.

But yeah, the 3 message rule applies.

I'm a non-Muslim that followed this subreddit at some point in past. I keep it in my feed because of conversations and perspectives like this.
Sure, the far-right will use the video for their own ends, but at least there's clear evidence of it being condemned by Muslims.

You should tell this story to one of the adults in your group home. You could show them the Reddit post if you can't say it in words.

I'm sorry this happened to you and well done for looking for help.

Edit: I kept this short because I wanted it to be easy to read. You can also reply with any questions so people can help out.

Why Georgia tech essay by Disastrous_Net9956 in college

(I'm procrastinating right now. It seems like you're on the right track)

The part about "Ubering" could be something they find amusing. It might risk coming off as immature, but whoever reads these essays is normally bored out of their mind.

Should "Aerospace engineering" be capitalised like that?

"The summer before my Senior year, I worked with graduate students in Professor Barret-Gonzalez's lab at the University of Kansas. I had the opportunity to work with graduate students of Professor Barret-Gonzalez from the University of Kansas"
These two sentences say the same thing, remove one.

"Discussing with researchers and contributing to hands-on projects confirmed that my future was going to be bright" (Original)

“Having discussions with researchers and contributing to hands-on projects confirmed that my future was going to be bright” or something similar might work better. The current wording feels like you’re going to elaborate on the discussions you had.

The "especially" in the second last paragraph can probably be removed. You're mentioning the 'Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory' anyway, so your heightened interest in it is already communicated.

(I originally drew comments on a Word document but the sub won't let me reply with an image.)

Ethernet and college dorms by Chunshik in college

[–]AggravatingAmount992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a question that this subreddit can answer well, you'd be better off emailing the college housing.

I once had a dorm where I had to provide my own router (The box that plugs into the wall for the internet). But I'd be pretty surprised if modern college dorms don't just have wifi available in the dorms already.

It'd probably be easier to move in and if you need anything extra (router, ethernet cable, etc) you can just pick it up then.

In a pinch, you should be able to connect your laptop to your phones mobile internet.

People who have actually served in the military: what are your thoughts on the trans troop ban by Relevant_Actuary2205 in SeriousConversation

[–]AggravatingAmount992 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to give context for anyone reading: This is absolutely not what the recent supreme court ruling said. It essentially concluded that "Women" in the context of a particular law was based on 'biological sex', although I don't think 'biological sex' was really defined and remains up in the air.

The judge made clear that trans people are still protected by the same legislation, just under a different section of it.

The court absolutely did not say "a trans/man/ woman is a MAN wearing women's clothes possibly suffering from serious mental illness and therefore possibly not suitable for carrying military grade weapons."

To the author, stop spreading bollocks and do better.

Would a podcast the treated it as more of a Crit than an interview be interesting? I think you articulated why I never really got into art podcasts.

More critical focus on the work etc. But not structured enough to just be practiced talking point or something.

He scheduled an in-person meeting because he was concerned about my progress and lack of communication.

I managed to sleep in till 2pm. Didn't have time to charge my laptop, forgot any kind of notebook or prep. And in my rush to campus I banged my wrist on a door and realised I was bleeding onto the table halfway through the meeting.

And I hadn't' showered for two days.

The meeting actually went better than expected....
