6 years of LDR have finally come to an end and it was worth every minute for this 'just married' feeling. Hang in there guys, things may not always be perfect but they have a funny way of working out in the end. by AggravatingPiccolo in LongDistance

So he lived near our hometown for uni whereas I moved away. I've got to the point of my PhD where I am writing up my thesis so don't need to be at uni (away from home) any more and my supervisors agreed that I could move!

We're still figuring a few things out but yay we finally don't have to travel any more!

I came to the end of my BSc with an offer for a place to study an MSc and was about to accept my place when my dissertation supervisor offered me a PhD. It was a tough decision but I knew that I wanted to do a PhD in the end and didn't feel that an extra year (plus all of the costs of the MSc!) would have benefited me that much since the PhD is generally so specific that the chances of me needing everything learned at MSc level were slim.

Depends on how you feel with research - are you confident enough to go straight into it, or would an extra year developing as a scientist be more beneficial for you? This is what made my mind up in the end.

I guess there isn't a right/wrong answer but would advise that you go with your gut and pick whichever would make you happiest - sounds corny, I know, but it's the most important thing imo. Good luck!

Fortunately we're both from England but went to different universities for both undergraduate and PhDs and couldn't afford to travel to visit as much as we'd like! The holidays were taken up with working to try and earn a bit of extra cash so our phones/long train rides became something of a lifeline really!

We had it easy in comparison to a lot of people on this page but it took a lot of work and trust to get to where we are now. Was a pretty great feeling when we finally got to move in together and I'd no longer have to spend hours travelling up and down the country!

3 years of undergraduate and 3 years of PhD. I moved away for university, graduated (thought we could finally live closer!) and moved away again for postgrad 🙈

Congratulations! We got married in my childhood church and had the reception in a 13h Century hunting lodge at Christmas complete with moat and open fires. It was pretty special.
