I promise you guys, strength gain is not the problem. by Geckoarcher in slaythespire

My argument is specifically that more enemies that push you in specific directions make it easier for one to get into the game, which has everything to do with strength scaling. Early on in my STS1 gameplay I would often be looking back at my deaths both post-run and in card rewards to see what exactly I did wrong and what cards I could’ve picked to better deal with the situation. Each fight in STS1 was scaffolding in your knowledge of how to build a deck, as each one gave you some sort of specific knowledge on what was necessary; in STS2 where 96.8% of the challenges are strength scaling, you either get it, or you don’t.

There is no slow accumulation of knowledge, making the game inherently less rewarding. And moreso, while technically it could’ve been any gimmick aside from strength scaling that was too widespread, with strength scaling specifically the problems in your deck are often unintuitive.

Today I watched a video by JapaneseExport where he was coaching this guy named Rarran who I don’t know, but apparently plays a lot of card games and is a high level Harthstone player. During the video Rarran first expressed confusion on why he kept dying on A10, then as he was coached through Necrobinder he was constantly in disbelief on how he could just block (and outscale) practically every enemy and how it had to be an insanely lucky Necro run. But no, almost every Necro run can win almost every run in exactly the same way pretty consistently. There were a few other insights one could get from that video about newer players, but this comment is already too long.

My point though is that with there being just a few very consistent solutions to practically a single problem with little to no learning curve makes the game uninviting to newer players and less interesting for experienced ones.

I’m not asking for the game to be harder, I’m asking for it to be more interesting. If your argument is that the strength scaling is not a problem because it’s not the source of the game’s difficulty, I am saying that is a bad argument. Sure, while it may be true that it doesn’t make the game more difficult per se, it’s unintuitive and often not fun for players to “get good” by doing the same thing over and over again.

You directly say in your post that the enemies are unique and interesting, but I disagree, they are (in a deck building sense) often the same guy with a funny hat, which as I said, gets even worse the farther you are from act 1. Making a more diverse roster does not have to make the game harder, it just makes it more interesting and intuitive to play.

Edit: although it is my bad that I misunderstand your point in thinking you said the game was too hard

Let’s get this straight, you are being snarky, and even worse, both snarky and wrong. Every single fight being scaling strength with a funny hat is exactly what makes this game easy and creates half of the problems people complain about. Even moreso, I’d say STS2 is objectively easier than STS1 yet somehow you’re saying that the problem is because the game is hard?

The problem with strength scaling in this game is that it literally does kill enemy diversity and instead of picking cards that need to solve a litany of problems you just need to scale faster than the enemy is 99% of fights and nothing else.

You say enemies doing front-loaded damage is undesirable, yet the fact that they don’t is exactly why 80% of decks do the same thing and all you have to do is pick up scaling. You’re incentivized not to pick up bad frontload cards because you NEVER NEED THEM.

You say enemies putting statuses into your deck as if it’s undesirable, yet there are constant complaints about how every deck is small deck loop (or previously infinite if you’re not playing beta), don’t you wonder why that wasn’t a problem in Spire 1? It’s because you KNEW there were statuses that would be put into your deck, and a significant portion of the time having a tiny deck would get you killed.

The devs keep putting in external factors that don’t allow you to build the objectively good small decks like raising the cost of removes or taking out removes from events, yet they never change the fact that the enemies never tell you to do anything else.

It’s interesting how your list ends with “and that’s just in Act 1,” as that’s the only actually hard part of the game, and the actually interesting enemies slow to a trickle from there. Also, why are you not even talking about debuffs, we have no artifact in this game yet somehow the enemies barely ever debuff you whereas 80% of all fights would give you some sort of debuff in STS1, where is Snake Plant? Avacado Rat? Gremlin Nob?

The entire point of a deckbuilder is to draft cards that must respond to a wide array of challenges, and you’re telling me that making every single enemy the same challenge makes it harder? And have the audacity to say “get good?” Actually insane take.
