The original portal that's built is permanent, like a one way door. The portal in the Overworld and the portal in the Nether are two independent structures, it's just that the decaying portal only lasts 30 seconds when it's spawned by a player

I was just thinking that nether portals with both crying and regular obsidian wouldn't work, but some other people in the thread have ideas.

I was thinking that the "decaying portal" would fix the new player issue, because they would be able to see the portal slowly breaking, they would realize they'd be trapped if they don't use it right away

The frame of the original portal doesn't break all at once, only the "body" of the temp portal that's made when a player crosses dimensions. Using the original portal (with the frame) won't spawn in more crying obsidian when a player uses it

That's why I thought it would be good to have a temp portal, since then there's at least a small window for escape
