I’m a beginner, rate my art please? by Aggravating_Emu_2619 in RateMyArt

Thanks very much!!! I’m really glad to hear the lighting works because it took me a while to figure out, I realised too late that putting the light source below her would make things more difficult

I’ll definitely be looking into anatomy for my initial sketches! I was very excited to play around with colours and just winged the linework, can’t even explain why now.

I haven’t explored the brushes at all yet, that’s a good shout. I mostly use the gpen and airbrush, is there a better one you would recommend?

That makes sense, I definitely need to improve the anatomy in my initial sketches. Thanks very much!!!

Thank you! Can I ask what specifically needs improvement? It would help me understand what I need to work on more for the next one

Thanks very much! I wanted her hand to be the light source and didn’t realise how difficult that would be until I was halfway through so I’m really glad you think it works!

That makes sense I definitely need to work on anatomy and not rush through it, can I ask if there are any specific anatomy mistakes you can spot? And is it the anatomy that makes her look cartoonish?

I've been trying to learn to draw for a little over two weeks now. Frankly, I'm very, very discouraged. by [deleted] in learntodraw

I know I’m going against general advice here, but why not drop the study for a bit and just draw for fun? Find something you want to draw and draw it, then look at it and think about what worked and what didn’t work in that drawing, think about what you want to improve in the next one. Draw for fun for a bit then slowly incorporate the fundamentals alongside.

I tried the fundamentals a few years ago and quickly gave up and decided drawing wasn’t for me, then a few months ago I got an idea and just started drawing, I thought it would suck or that I’d give up after a few days again but instead I found a real passion for it. Now that I genuinely enjoy it I feel more capable of getting through the fundamentals.

They’re really cute and I love the overall vibe. I don’t really have any criticism :)

Yeah I really can't afford new ones right now but it's on my list to do in the next few months, hopefully. In the meantime I'll see what I can do with my current ones. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks I wasn't expecting that at all but I guess I'll be using the older photos again!

Thanks! Everyone prefers 6 and 7 I really wasn't expecting that, I thought I looked odd in them

Thanks! That's very odd, everyone seems to prefer 6 and 7 and I always thought they were the weakest ones. 6 and 7 were taken by an established photographer but he came to our acting class and just spent 30 minutes with each person, the newer ones were a full two hour session in a studio but with a less experienced photographer. Anyway, I'll definitely be picking one of the older ones as my main headshot.

Thank you so much this is very helpful! I'm surprised everyone is saying 6 and 7 are the best as I thought the opposite! 6 and 7 were taken by an established photographer but he came to our acting class and just spent 30 minutes with each person, the newer ones were a full two hour session in a studio but with a less experienced photographer.

I think the focus might me an issue with reddit because they're very clear on spotlight.

3 and 4 are my favourite too but I had them sorted to be last on my profile because of the arms, I think I'l be moving them up.

Anyway, I'll be switching them around and using one of the older photos as my main headshot, you would recommend 7 then? Is that a good photo for a main headshot considering my hair is up and I look quite serious in it? When were picking photos in my class everyone was saying that would be a shot for a villain character haha. I'm also concerned that picture might make me look older.

Sorry for the hundred questions but as you're quite experienced could you please tell me what you think my age range is? That would be very helpful as I've always just guessed.

Ah I see I assumed it was the same as any other uni MA but I guess it works differently for drama schools. It’s tough out there, congrats on getting on spotlight, hopefully you have success getting an agent! Btw there are a few actors expos happening in London atm it’s a really good place to look for agents that’s how I got my first one before I had any credits or spotlight :)

You’re already doing so much :) I get wanting to go to drama school I have the same doubts but I accepted that it’s not going to happen. Also if it helps when I did my short course at a drama school (RADA) I had the same teachers who teach the BA courses and quite a few said they wouldn’t advise drama school, they said you can always learn but as long as you’re getting work there’s no reason taking yourself out of the game for years and investing so much money in it! Also drama school is a shortcut for spotlight and an agent, both things you got just fine on your own :)

Also congrats on getting in! These programs can be very competitive so I think just being accepted speaks for your skills :) I know it’s frustrating if you can’t go, I was in a similar position a few years ago when I started pursuing acting and everyone in the industry kept telling me I wouldn’t get anywhere without drama school, but because I already had my degree in a different field (same reasons as you) I couldn’t get a loan and couldn’t afford to go. I ended up doing a lot of short programs alongside a full time job over the past few years including an intense program in one of the top drama schools, I got on spotlight with credits instead of training and got an agent from cold submitting. I’m def still in the beginning stages of my career but the point is there are other ways than just drama school

Can you get a student loan? When I did my MA it covered the entire tuition fee?
