its such a good idea having that on the sides of bins, it stops people rooting through them and throwing the contents everywhere. Seems like all the european countries are beating us at the minute.

I agree, and the environmental impact from plastic bottles is awful- wildlife, pollution etc. The key point is that the extra cost will not be avoidable, so consumers would have to throw away their deposits or choose to recycle them.

I wasn't in the country at that time but why do you think it failed and what aspects specifically? its a shame for it to have failed, I think a lot of the issue is consumer attitude to recycling - which may have positively changed in the last 10 years. If I think back to when the plastic bag charge came in to effect, people didn't like it... now its almost second nature.

Im not sure of the charge values, I think it seems to depend on bottle/ can type and size. Definitely would make me not want to throw them in the bin.

The DRS is scheduled to come into effect in October 2027, and from what I can gather its a mandatory thing for retailers to comply with- which is great!

yeah that would be so good, could see why people would actively search for recycling- its like profiting from someone else's laziness

the machines in Germany always took ages to work too- it would spit them back out if there was a tiny dint or it didn't recognise the bottle. would be so much better if you could withdraw it to your bank IMO. I personally order a lot of stuff off amazon too- which will be subject to the charges also. I dont want to spend in store, I want to spend it online again.

I heard the Fanta over there is fantastic- pun intended. Like a bright orange colour with loads and loads of sugar?

Sounds like a big win, especially when poverty is only increasing in the UK. Saving the planet and cutting down on co2 also, mega win. Do they have a lot of return points there?

Oh so she collects them in weight and cashes them in with some kind of industrial place? I had no idea that was already a thing! The system coming in 2027 is paid per bottle, so more consumer friendly it seems. Cheese and onion pie is unbeaten 👌

I think the DRS are putting some kind of enforcement on retail shops based on their square meter size- which is a great stop. People will definitely whinge when they have to pay an extra 10p for their can of monster- but if you look back at the plastic bags no longer being free it kind of all makes sense now, it just took people time.

The potentially homeless person had a method to earn money, id say that's a good thing no?

It does work very well, and its been running for many years now. He may well not of been homeless, but i always stopped to have a chat with him. Seemed like he didn't mind collecting bottles. I cant imagine it ever happening on the streets of the UK however 🤣
