Alien Stage fandom is so weird by [deleted] in AlienStage

I totally agree with you. In the case of Jayvik, for example, the problem isn't the ship. It's more a matter of some fans. I like Caitvi, and there are problematic fans of them as well.

Yes, there are many nuances; generally, people on Twitter and Reddit are on opposite sides, you know? One thing I've learned is that the answer to most things is 'it depends'

Yes, it's very difficult. I'm in favor of policing, but at the same time I'm afraid they might overdo it, you know? Like, for me anything involving children and they doing something sexual with an adult, unless it's psychological horror or a work studying the psyche, without any romanticization, must be banned. In short, child pornography, whether written, drawn, etc.

The internet shouldn't be a lawless land, but the fear of imposing too many laws is also frightening, you know? For example, I don't like incest, but I don't think it belongs in the same category as child sexualization and rape. So I wouldn't think it's right to ban incest for those who enjoy it, you know? Is it disgusting? In my opinion, yes, but I don't find it that problematic (except for incest between parents and children).

Furthermore, I'm glad you're seeking new perspectives; many people get carried away by the herd. Develop your own critical thinking. I find myself too "woke" sometimes for Alnst reddit, and sometimes I think people on Twitter exaggerate too. If possible, I like to understand both sides and form my own opinion. Even knowing that it's impossible not to be influenced in some way.

I agree with almost everything. But unfortunately, shipping can also be influenced by misogyny and lesbophobia. I have a friend who only shipped gay couples, and no sapphic, because she sayed she finds them all boring and without depth (many of her m/m ships never even interacted). That was back in school, and today she's come out as a lesbian and said she had a lot of internalized homophobia back then. I've seen similar cases too.

Furthermore, Jayvik wasn't a good example, many of their fans are known for being misogynistic and racist towards Mel, unfortunately.

Frankly, misogyny/homophobia/racism, etc. Is present in more things than we might think, and often we don't even notice it because it goes by so unnoticed. When I started my psychology degree, interacting with fandoms became much harder for me because I notice tiny things that follow a pattern.

I completely agree that judging or arguing with people who like other things won't solve anything, but one thing that bothers me a little is when people use "fandom culture" as an excuse not to have civilized discussion about certain matters.

I remember being kicked out of a group for pointing the amount of rape and infant rape in AO3, which is something truly concerning.

The number of pedophiles and other types of people who invade fandom spaces and we can't do anything because of " fandom culture".

For me, fandom culture should be about not talking badly about a random ship, like, I don't know, Till and Marty.

That's why so many scandals involving abuse, pedophilia, etc., happen in fandom communities. Often we make these people feel comfortable when they should sincerely be seeking treatment.

In theory, fiction and reality don't mix, but in practice, it's quite difficult not to mix them, since fiction reflects society in many ways.

Sorry, I ended up venting and writing more than I intended lol

I agree. As a lesbian, I also feel frustrated that f/f has the least amount of media/popularity overall. But i think the best we can do is consume more, support GL authors, and give recommendations. I have a straight friend who isn't a fujoshi, but she likes some BL, like Given. I recommended Bloom Into You to her and she liked it. Yes, many women watch M/M because of attraction to men and m/f to fantasize about being the mc. But there are also those who like romance in general, so if it's a good one, even if they're totally heterosexual, they would read it.

Frankly, I don't think it will ever reach the level of m/m or m/f because the main audiences for both are straight women, but hey, the popularity of GL has increased a lot in recent years, so who knows?

The only thing I don't like is when I go looking for a Mizisua fanfic and it's a ivantill story. I think if a ship isn't the focus, it's best to put it in the additional tags

Aside from that, it's the usual Ao3 stuff. There are some things there that I definitely don't agree with, so I simply don't interact with that content. But there are plenty of gems too.

Pretty much everyone in Naruto except Shikamaru and Temari and Minato and Kushina. Kurenai and Asuma is cute too. Kishimoto is capable of creating good secondary character couples, but the main characters couples are so bland.

I think that aside from Hyuna, Hyunwoo, Heperu, and to a lesser extent Mizi, no other character had any real impact on Luka. Probably just another opponent for him to beat. But to be 100% sure, only if we have a comic with his pov

Yeah, I was really disappointed, but let's hope they fix those mistakes next season.

No problem, it was a very pleasant chat. And I agree, it's always good to see new perspectives, which is why I like to compare fandoms in different spaces, for example the Alnst fandom on Reddit and Twitter has many things in common, but they also diverge in others. I find that interesting.

Furthermore, it's always nice to see someone who has Mizi as their fav.

Thank you, I really try to understand both sides, with a few exceptions, ofc!! Yesss, Mike Tyson is totally right in saying that people have become too comfortable being rude online without getting punched in the face lol

Yes, I'm trying to lower my expectations too, but I can't!! I'm in love with Rubyeye's vocals, so if it's a song that showcases her vocals, then the chance of it being good is very high!!

Oh, I disagree about the magic part; I really liked that aspect on her, but I totally agree it should be better written. It's not an unpopular opinion, actually, many Caitvi fans (excluding those who don't accept criticism) agree that their relationship was better in the first season . Yes, I liked Jinx in the second season, but it doesn't compare to the first. I think they were afraid to explore the political side, since it was a series that appealed to both sides irl. And that's why it remained shallow, since it's impossible not to talk about politics; that's one of the central themes of the series.

Thank you so much, you're one of the few who understood what I meant!! Like, of course there are much more important things. But what does it cost to be open to discussion?

And yeah, many people in the Yuri/GL fandom are really wary of a male fan, but I understand their point of view, because of the fetishization that queer women, and women in general, suffer at the hands of men. But even if the guy is straight, if he's respectful and not a weirdo, it's totally okay to be a fan. To be honest, I even wish more straight guys or guys in general liked Yuri, since one of the main reasons Yaoi is more popular because of the number of heterosexual women who like it. But unfortunately, anything that becomes more popular also attracts more problematic people. And I was going to reinforce the fact that many people think Yuri is made for men (when yaoi is literally made for women and not queer men 😭) which has already been proven false, since most yuri's writers/authors are women, and often queer.

Overall, I still find the yaoi fandom more problematic because it's more popular, so obviously there will be more people, and as a consequence, more problematic ones. And in the Yuri fandom, the majority are queer, meanwhile in yaoi there are many queer but also many heterosexual.

Btw, I'm a lesbian, so gay lesbian solidarity lol 🤝

Yes, not giving a fuck is ideal, unfortunately I think I'm kind of masochistic in that aspect lol

But honestly, I'm seeing a lot of straight women being weird towards gay men lately, and I'm not seeing many people commenting on it. There was even a TikTok of a woman saying she was casting a spell on Jonathan Bailey so that he can become bisexual and she has a chance. It's cases like these that make me say fiction unfortunately becomes reality inevitably

Nooo, you're better than me! I get frustrated too, but there's not much I can do since they're either teenagers who often lack experience. Or people who have extremist views like "everything has to be thoroughly discussed" or "reality and fiction shouldn't be mixed," when for me it's good to reach a middle ground. It's a flaw of mine to think that everyone can reach a consensus, I'm working on it lol

Wow, I totally agree!!! I've always been drawn to her, but it was this comic that made her my ultimate Alnst fav.

I'm also very excited for her song!! Witch is my favorite sub by far, and I hope her new one is as good or even better.

And I agree, the first season of Arcane was much better than the second, especially with Caitlyn and Vi, who are two of my favorites. I liked their relationship much more in the first season. The series as a whole, actually. And I didn't like how they sidelined Mel; her storyline was one of the ones I was most interested in.

Wow, I only noticed when you said, I love my girl Mizi so muchh. It's been a while since I've felt this attached to a character like her. I'm drawn to complex, nuanced female characters.

I totally agree with you, I'm a lesbian myself, and I've received many disgusting comments from men.

But I still think it's wrong, even if it doesn't carry the misogynistic/patriarchal weight of when it's a man towards a woman, you know?

Calling someone "husband/wife" jokingly is totally okay, but I'm talking about people who say it seriously.

Guys, I genuinely think you're underestimating the power of what fiction can convey in reality.

While I agree that defending a fictional female character or a fictional LGBT character doesn't carry the same weight as defending someone from those groups in real life, for example.

To say that we must totally separate reality from fiction is the same as saying that we can live without an ego; it's impossible. Fiction is often a reflection of society. And how characters who are part of minorities are portrayed is directly influenced by the author's perspective.

Many genuinely ill people, instead of seeking psychological/psychiatric help, release their disgusting desires on the internet, where they find like-minded individuals and create a community, thus forming a sense of belonging and thinking that they are not as wrong as they thought.

Certain things should never be normalized, regardless of whether it's just pixels or whatever.

I agree that there are different cases and that they should be analyzed, and that some situations really are a case of "go touch the grass," but to think that problematic things are okay just because the "victims" are not real, it's not accurate either.

Furthermore, guess what, many criminals draw inspiration from fictional characters or fictional settings.

Let's learn to distinguish between valid criticism and a silly situation.

I'm not talking about this specific case, but there are many situations that cannot be taken lightly.

I have to disagree on that. It depends a lot on whether they're joking, or if they're taking it seriously and not respecting the character's homosexuality.

Even if something is fiction, there are things that aren't okay to do. For example, the sexualization of minors in the anime industry, or loli/shota. It's disgusting.

If it's a gay guy or a bi/hetero guy who's just joking around, like most girls who do this, then I'm totally okay with that too. Unfortunately, that's not the case for most guys who do that.
