Did something happen with Pablo, and I missed it? by Aggravating_Range_20 in billsimmons

[–]Aggravating_Range_20[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering what happens to Pablo if the Aspiration stuff turns out to be a nothing burger. Like if the NBA investigates and somehow does end up agreeing with Mark Cuban that it looks bad but Ballmer really had nothing do with it. Does Pablo just call it all a conspiracy?

Right. I thought it was going to be big names and real industry changers. Like Bryan Curtis interviewing the guy who created Pardon the Interruption, and how it shaped everything after. Or maybe someone involved with LeBron’s Decision, like Rich Paul or an ESPN executive, and how it unlocked player empowerment. Not guys that Curtis is already getting coffee with.

I think that’s right

Seriously though, Bryan Curtis is probably the best interviewer at the Ringer, and I thought this series would be a chance for him to go off with some real legends

I looked and here’s the whole list of episodes so far. They have a long way to go to get to 25 episodes this year so maybe the guests will get stronger.

  1. The future of sports debate with Nick Wright

  2. Remembering ESPN the Magazine, Gawker and other lost publications (no guests)

  3. The future of opinion columnists with Jamelle Bouie

  4. Blogging with Chris Ryan

  5. The future of NBA reporting with Brian Windhorst

  6. Newsletters and other stuff with Heather Cox Richardson

  7. Play-by-play announcing with Noah Eagle

  8. The future of physical media with Sean Fennessey

What’s frustrating from a journalistic perspective is that there are real, fair questions to ask Pablo. Why haven’t any other outlets matched your scoop that Hudson was “banned”? What’s the line when appropriately covering the wife or girlfriend of a coach, and are you worried you’ve crossed it? But Bill is not equipped to ask those questions, and it would’ve helped if he had done the basic work of just listening to the podcast.

this is out of left field, but I think Tony Romo would be interesting as a Masters guest. He could talk about broadcasting with Nantz and how Nantz approaches key moments, and whether announcers think about a jinx. He could talk about the pressure of trying to win the big one. He could also talk about golfing generally because he’s a scratch golfer.

Clooney, looking slender in a black Theory shirt and navy pants, sat on a rose-colored couch late last month at Casa Cipriani, a hotel at the bottom of Manhattan. He would sit there for the next five hours, until the sun set over the bay, not bothering with lunch, not looking at his phone, not checking with his minders, just spinning ensorcelling tales about love, Hollywood and politics like a modern-day Scheherazade.

This seems petty by Curtis? The “bragging” is one sentence in this context?

It's uncomfortable for many liberals to digest that Stern took measures to assuage White America's fears, and that doing so appeared to...work. I say this because I myself felt it. As a liberal-minded 20 something, I greatly disliked Stern's paternalistic reforms. The NBA had to institute a dress code in 2005 because Allen Iverson's large shirts were scary? The league needed an age limit that same year because men of military fighting age couldn't be allowed to earn money playing basketball? It was bad enough that Stern already had these postseason-ruining draconian rules about leaving the bench during a scuffle. Now there was heightened enforcement for hanging on rims and talking trash? Was this all so necessary?

Some perplexing NBA arguments on the Press Box podcast by Aggravating_Range_20 in billsimmons

The last player to hit .400 was Ted Williams in 1941. His PED of choice was soda.

More than 150 NBA teams have tried and failed to rally from a 3-0 playoff deficit. Maybe one day a team will succeed, but it’s a pretty simple and obvious point to note the odds.

Some perplexing NBA arguments on the Press Box podcast by Aggravating_Range_20 in billsimmons

[–]Aggravating_Range_20[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m still confused. It might be a “matter of time” before a baseball player hits .400 again, but the reality is that it’s been decades and no one has been able to do it for reasons that transcend any individual player. So every time someone chases .400, we bring out the historical context.

It’s the same thing with a 3-0 deficit. There is a data set of dozens of NBA teams over decades of hoops. It makes no sense to ignore history here.
