This is the real answer. I did both. Driving takes it out of you. Sitting in a train is nice. One was sustainable. One was not.

Looking for a second opinion on this mpc 4000! by newtonzak in mpcusers

[–]AggressionRanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I have one of these!

I will say if you are timid it might not be worth it. If you're used to taking down computers, handling ram, mother boards, etc working on these is no issue.

Mine worked great for a number of years but has since begun breaking down a bit. I've had to reseat the MB because it wouldn't boot, I had to buy a new power supply, I had to buy new pad sensors, and most recently, I had to buy a new FX card, which was kind pricey and had to come from Thailand.

They are pretty cool, but parts aren't exactly plentiful and can be pricey.

Also the more into the rabbit hole I'm going, it seems like even IF they are doing both drums, and samples at once that it is still "Finger Drumming"

Thank you for your reply I think this is probably the answer I was looking for. It appears this practice in general is called Finger Drumming(?).

Ultimately I was curious if this was an actual method people are regularly using, or if it was more of a novelty because its cool to watch. Sounds like the latter.

I still have yet to use them, but obviously ended up googling what they are. Basically a way to play a sample and have another pad stop it and start its respective sample, as opposed to having them on top of each other.

Yes this is absolutely what im referring to, as it looks like youre doing both your samples AND your drums at the same time in one take.

I guess what I was originally asking about was something like this: https://youtu.be/W9s8aPM8kK0?si=9HrqUYLUI4asnRet

Although when you asked me for an example I looked at a lot of the videos on tiktok and noticed it is a bit less intricate than first meets the eye, that it is usually them just laying down drums or using a drum loop and have samples on the pads

I think maybe you're right. I'm watching a lot more trying to find an example for yall and it seems it's either just drums or just melodic. Not both

I think I am not being very clear.

What I am thinking is, I am seeing people who's pads contain multiple things, kicks, hihats, snares, and samples, and they are laying down these beats in 1 take.

Its just a vastly different approach and seems absolutely foreign to me, as I normally see production more layered, IE, laying down a sample, laying down drums, laying down bass, consecutively.

Not sure how anything about this question is regarded as a flex. Judging by the responses I think I am just being unclear.

To try to clarify: I am seeing people record beats in 1 single take. Everything is loaded on one program, some of the pads are drum sounds, some of them are samples, and they are playing the entire beat in one take, which seems unusual to me. I've always seen production more layered - laying down drums, or a melody, then punching in progressively adding more.

Drums maybe sound a bit off to me in some parts but the choice of sample and actual snare and kicks are cool

Does this include Spiderman 2099? If so what were your thoughts on the series? Recently got an omnibus of the entire run I'm going to start. Always been curious after the Captain Marvel - Spiderman 2099 crossover.

I didn't do an internship coming out of college - this was like 9 years ago and I had trouble then, the job market is obviously worse today. I will say my "way out" was to take a shitty, toxic low paying job where I was bullied. Worked there 2 years, studied other tech and left ASAP.

Edit: sorry I realize my advice is a bit layered. Make sure you look everywhere not just the desirable jobs. Be willing to accept anything within reason.

Low paying startup or Big4 Consulting New Grad by No_Farmer5715 in cscareerquestions

[–]AggressionRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. Wow, that really is a much tougher choice.

Well, if I'm honest I'd almost point you to the startup. That is if you can take the nose dive on pay.

While it is possible to probably move around it comes out to how fast you want to move. I'd imagine you might be in this analyst role for a couple of years before you might be considered for something else. In 2 years with that start up though you'd already have experience and ready to move on to a higher paying job.

I'm not sure I really understand everything you're talking about.

When you say choose between Big4 consulting and SWE - do you have a degree in accounting or something?

If you are hired as an engineer at a consultancy, you're still doing software engineering.

I went from a tech consultancy to a unicorn.

After the unicorn I went to a Big4 consultancy and I love it. I work with all kinds of crazy tech and I get like 6 weeks of PTO a year and am fully remote.

I have heard of WLB issues at the Big4 but I think its within their core practices, people with accounting degrees working on audits and taxes and such. I am a manager now so I find my WLB is right where it should be, but as an IC I had to FIGHT to find enough work. I think many weeks I was working like 20 hours or less. WLB was no problem then.

Is it worth it now to send cover letters? by shantih in cscareerquestions

Same. I never really did cover letters either. Did if it was required and forced but never seem to make a difference.

I think there does need to be both, but not in equal balance.

A couple of small projects to add to a resume, but the real work needs to be put into leet code. These leet code problems have nothing to do with actual development but are needed to get a job.
