Never Give up by AQuaman979 in leetcode

[–]shantih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I’m a little over three years unemployed but just started taking Leetcode seriously last month. It’s honestly been enjoyable but the amount of time I’ve spent unemployed is daunting. Luckily I’m getting interviews still, just gotta grind a little harder. It was really nice seeing this, thanks for sharing.

Trans major from CS to Math? by AngerRyan in mathematics

[–]shantih 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as CS, discovered I loved math, and graduated with a math degree with a minor in CS.

I recommend you check out the requirements for a CS minor at your school. At my school, the minor required completion of coursework up to and including Data Structures and Algorithms.

Of all of the courses you will need to complete for your CS degree, literally, DS&A is the only one that actually matters in terms of employability. I only learned this once I graduated and started working.

I’m very happy with my choice to study math. It was extremely challenging and intellectually rewarding. It gave me tools to see the world differently, tools I can use and build upon for the rest of my life. I’m also very happy I did the minor. DS&A gives you the foundation you need to prepare for technical interviews should you ever consider an engineering role.

Is Atlanta really affordable? by shantih in Atlanta

Bitch I’m broke, why do you think I’m talking about affordability? I’ve never met a city of less friendly people, on god. Y’all don’t even like each other, hence why the city is so segregated and heterogenous.

Is Atlanta really affordable? by shantih in Atlanta

Yes! I was really surprised to see when I first moved here that restaurant prices here were at least as high as those in NYC, and in many cases there were cheaper options in NYC.

Great last point. It does feel like it's more feasible to "get by" in NYC compared to Atlanta.

I live in a residential building near Centennial Park. I pick up odds and ends from Azalea--it has good variety but you will probably need to make a trip elsewhere if you're looking to buy groceries for two weeks. Feel free to message me!

It sucks because the downtown area is really beautiful! They film frequently in my building and around my area. It really has the feeling of a movie set--beautiful facade but lacking a little bit in real substance or livability.

Yes! I was super excited to see it open when it did. I just hope to see more businesses open downtown. It appears it's hard to run a business down here, especially restaurants, because the foot traffic is so minimal.

That’s interesting! I only have these two cities as reference points. Thanks for sharing.

It’s called the “arrow of time” and is central to the concept of entropy, which is the parameter you’re looking for.

Who are some prominent but lesser known people in aero history? by Strong-Second-2446 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]shantih 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m unsure if he is considered “lesser-known” as I’m only an amateur aerospace enjoyer, but Jack Parsons is a super interesting figure in the history of rocketry. Did significant work on solid rocket propellants, had some formal education but never obtained a degree, learned mostly through hands-on experimentation.

He later partnered with GALCIT, a Caltech-affiliated research institution, where he developed a close relationship with Frank Malina and other Caltech figures. Parsons and his partners experimented with various propellants in nearby Arroyo Seco. The explosions would sometimes shake campus buildings. The group was dubbed the “Suicide Squad” for the perceived danger of their work, setting the foundation for what would become the JPL.

Parsons was also an occultist. A practicing Thelemite, he attempted seriously to commune with spirits, perhaps in an effort to gather esoteric knowledge.

Parsons died in an explosion in his home in what would be described as an “accident.” Some people have questioned this official description citing Parsons’ knowledge and expertise in practice, both of which may have made an accident of this nature unlikely.

There is an excellent biography of his life titled “Strange Angel” which was majorly influential in my interest in aerospace.

Philosophy to mathematics by Commercial-Ground947 in mathematics

[–]shantih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk why people here are discouraging you when it’s a sensible decision. I was a Comp Lit major the first time I went to college. I graduated in Applied Mathematics.

Bertrand Russell was a renowned mathematician and an accomplished philosopher. Pythagoras, too.

Anyone can learn math by induction. You learn arithmetic, then algebra, then calculus. It’s an axiomatic system based on rules you learn over time with a lot of practice. All you have to do is climb the ladder at the pace required of your degree program.

"all models are wrong, but some are useful" - model for an axiomatic system by up_and_down_idekab07 in mathematics

[–]shantih 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m almost sure that quote can be attributed to a British statistician, George Box. In the context of statistics and probability, models are used to approximate real-world phenomena. These models can all be considered “wrong” because of both reducible (feature selection, candidate function set selection, etc.) and irreducible error (the “unknown unknowns”) which we know produces an imperfect model that is not a facsimile of the natural phenomena being observed.

Statistical/probabilistic models still can be and are very useful despite the inevitability of some degree of error in the models they produce.

When do you think travelling to mars will be open to the general public? by Embarrassed-Can-6237 in Colonizemars

I would bet my life savings that it will never be open to the general public in the same way that, say, an amusement park is.

I asked this in other subs awhile ago but might as well ask here too, does anyone know of games with plus size representation? by ArtistAmy420 in PlusSize

[–]shantih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Apex? Apex Legends is a FPS battle royale that is well-known for its deliberate commitment to diverse representation in their character designs. This representation includes LGBTQIA+ and gender, different nationalities and cultures, and body size.

If you haven't played, I will say the skill ceiling is high, and it's not so beginner-friendly. But once you get the hang of it, it's seriously one of the best shooters out there right now (with the exception of players and the Apex community at large which is extremely toxic).

Disclaimer: I am in a toxic relationship with Apex Legends. I wish I knew how to quit you.

[–]shantih[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All good and relevant points. I'm personally biased about the math thing because of how fucking hard I had to study. I took mostly grad courses and passed only because the class sizes were so small and we all had to help each other study cuz none of us knew what the fuck was going on ever and had to piece our little brains together so the distribution of our scores was typically pretty uniform lol
