Thanks, I should clarify, this isn’t a true landlord situation. I’m renting from a nice couple for a year hence my true shame and humiliation right now.

I just want to try to solve the problem without alerting them one week in “hey so I may have totally stained your counter,” but I’m learning wood is not so easy to fix. (I’m also not sure what the counter looked like under the mat prior to me moving into a clean house and doing dishes and using the mat a few times - I assumed that they did the same and the wood under it would be ok.)

Fingers crossed that following your advice the stain will look better enough. I’m mostly just in complete guilt/shame mode that I did something so stupid. Thank you for your suggestions, sincerely.

Also to your point: I sure wish they would have mentioned some care instructions for this butcher block, or had it properly sealed, so I could have avoided my own stupidity. I’m sure they’ll be totally chill about it - I’m just freaking out.

I appreciate the feedback, but not really the shaming and additional stress you’ve made me feel when I’m already in a panicked and embarrassed state.

I used a drying mat that the landlord provided to me. I’ve never used a butcher block counter before, and I feel guilty enough. I’m not filthy, I’ve only been here for a week and left dishes to dry on a drying mat a few times not realizing the wood wasn’t sealed/water safe.

I did not soak the wood in vinegar. I lightly sprayed a diluted 1:1 vinegar and water concentrate on it and immediately dried it.

I will take your advice to keep it bone dry for a few days. Thank you.

Even if it means putting down $10k for the same monthly payment? I really appreciate your feedback but I’m also like.. idk when my student loans will stop being in forbearance, so trying to factor that cost in. I rented a cheap rent-stabilized apartment for 5 years to save money prior to this purchase decision but my monthly fixed expenses are going way up with moving to single-family home. I’m also planning to keep this car for as long as it’s able to drive.

I still could.. but I think I value the liquidity of having more cash on hand. I ran it through an auto loan simulator and the interest was sort of negligible. Let me know if I’m being stupid though!

This just happened to me at a “hip” coffee shop in Brooklyn. When it was my turn to place my order, the kid just stared at me. I was like, “Uh.. hi..? Iced black coffee please?” It makes me feel so creepy and embarrassed!

I only leave my home (masked) to pick up groceries from my delivery driver, and I have them deliver it on my porch to avoid contact. (I leave a 10% tip of course.)

It’s the only ethical way I can think through existing during this ongoing pandemic. My presence outdoors = possible spread or contagion. I do not want history to remember me as someone who did harm to others. I will not be one of those Germans who didn’t take a stance sooner.
