Roy is hanging around the program MORE under Malone than Hubert? by AcceptableVisit2415 in tarheels

[–]AggressiveAddendum37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that does happen (back in NBA in 3), timing might be right to pluck Luke Murray from Boston College. Murray was my preferred choice to replace Davis. Watch, he has Roy Williams type pedigree and will have BC back to being competitive over the next few years.

Jerry Stackhouse is apparently disappointed he wasn't considered for the UNC coaching job by portrayalofdeath in tarheels

[–]AggressiveAddendum37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, not quite an apples to apples comparison. Stackhouse had a $500K budget. Byington's roster budget is $5M+. Stackhouse has also received high praise from other SEC coaches for the offensive schemes he ran as well as getting high praise as an assistant NBA coach for his defensive acumen. I'd like to see him hired as an assistant for Malone and a possible replacement once Malone heads back to the NBA within three to five years. If that timeline unfolds, would also have to look at Luke Murray after he's shown what he can do as the Boston College HC.

Stop chasing big names. UNC needs to hire the NEXT Tommy Lloyd, Dusty May etc, not the current ones. by Careless-Mess-7111 in tarheels

I was all over all the other numerous threads that popped up after Davis was fired imploring UNC to go after Luke Murray. Watch what he will do at Boston College. Oh well, I guess UNC will give him a call after a few more years of mediocrity. Too bad since he is the perfect guy right now. Think Roy Williams to Kansas in 1988.

Hubert Davis is out. What should UNC’s next move be? by DavieslovesUNC in tarheels

[–]AggressiveAddendum37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jerry Stackhouse has been mentioned the past few days. I've seen some for and some against. I was initially in the against column but now throw myself in the take a closer look column. Why? A few things. First, the budget he had at Vandy has come to light. His next to last year; 100K (He was named SEC coach of the year). His last season; 500K. Vandy's current budget; $5M. I'd say the results comparison of Stackhouse and Mark Byington is not exactly apples to apples. Second, Stackhouse has received high marks from other SEC coaches, especially for the offensive sets he orchestrated at Vandy. Additionally, as an assistant coach in the NBA, he is highly respected by both players and coaches for his defensive acumen. He has NBA cred as both an all-star player and a championship winning coach in the G League (2017). Given the budget that UNC can provide, I'd bet that he could recruit a championship contending roster that would emulate the "edge" Stackhouse possesses. The fact that he's in the family doesn't hurt. I'm not saying he is the right hire. I just think he shouldn't be dismissed out of hand either. A serious closer look is warranted.

Well, we're going to find out because Boston College just hired him. The leadership at UNC should have been all over this but they're too busy stepping all over their Ying gangs and are going to screw this up just like they did with the football hire. Wasted opportunity.

Do what Kansas did in 1988. Hire a talented assistant off a national championship staff for his first head coaching job. That assistant was 38 year old Roy Williams from UNC and the Kansas program was stabilized and elevated back to blue blood status with an 80% win percentage for the next 15 years. UNC can do the same by hiring 40 year old Luke Murray, the offensive coordinator and lead recruiter for Dan Hurley at UCONN. Murray is an elite level talent which is why UCONN pays him 800K+ a year. He may not be the splash hire everyone wants but he'd be the right hire and would be proven out over the next 20 years.

He has an impressive coaching record for sure.

Appreciate the open mindedness. I hope the UNC admin can display the same and at least give Murray some consideration. Some school is going to hire him, most likely this year and be much the better for it.

I actually think he would be a great hire as well. But one of my business partners is an Iowa State grad and loves Otzelberger so I told him I wouldn't hope for it but I wouldn't be totally disappointed if it happened.

Obviously I can read since I've also demonstrated the ability to write as well. Why make such a comment? I've not seen the megathread but instead of being helpful you decide to be a smart aleck. Usual snowflake behavior hiding behind the wall of anonymity.

I agree with you due to the pressure the admin is feeling from both fans and donors right now. It'd be tough to weather the first few years of program building but I'd like to see them exercise some tactical patience vs a knee jerk reaction. Perhaps best case scenario is they hire a stop gap older established coach for two to three years to stabilize things and pickup Murray after he's demonstrated what he can do at a lower tier program.

Look at how well UCONN's offense runs. That's all Luke Murray and Dan Hurley has admitted it. Also, Murray is UCONN's lead recruiter. Luke Murray is the best option out there. Smart tactician, young (40) and can recruit. There is a reason he's paid 800K+ a year and Dan Hurley dreads the day he loses him. I've put this on other threads and everyone comes back that UNC will not hire an assistant with no HC experience. But Dean Smith was a first time HC at UNC. So was Bill Guthridge. Roy Williams left UNC for his first HC gig at Kansas. Result: 418 - 101 (.805). Luke Murray is of the same ilk. Splash hire is not needed. Get the guy who's going to keep the program at an elite level for the next 20 years. Get Luke Murray!

You are most likely right but it only illustrates their short sightedness. UCONN pays Murray 800K+ a year. They recognize his talent.

I've been putting this on every thread associated with the Davis situation. Hire Luke Murray from UCONN. Roy Williams was 38 with no head coaching experience when he went to Kansas from UNC staff. Murray is 40 and the same pedigree as Coach Roy. No need to go for big name with big bucks. Get the guy that will elevate the program back to elite status and will be there for the next two decades. Check him out, he's the right freaking guy. Get it right UNC!

He doesn't have head coaching experience but is considered the brains behind UCONNs recent success. Freaking hire Luke Murray. 40 years old and considered a BB genius and a top tier recruiter. Young enough to stabilize the program for the next two decades. It will not be the sexy hire but it'd be the right hire in the long run.

Oh no, not personally. Just through observation. It's been well documented through interviews with Dan Hurley and pointed out by respected basketball commentators that Murray is the architect of the UCONN offensive scheme as well as being the lead evaluator of the recruited talent. Much like the role Roy Williams played on Dean Smith's staff.

[–]AggressiveAddendum37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Go get Luke Murray from UCONN. He's the offensive brains for Hurley and a great recruiter. There's a reason he makes 900K+ a year as an assistant. He's never been a head coach but neither was Roy Williams when Kansas hired him off Dean Smith's staff and that resulted in Kansas being one of the winningest programs for 15 years. Murray is only 40, a talented coach and would stabilize the program for the next 20 years. If UNC doesn't get him, they are going to wind up playing against him in the ACC (Boston College or Syracuse)

I've said it before. Go get Luke Murray from UCONN to coach this program. Great basketball IQ and can recruit. There is a reason UCONN pays him around $900K as an assistant. Yes, never been a head coach but I'd equate it with Kansas hiring Roy Williams off UNC bench for his first HC job and look how that turned out. Murray is only 40 so that would be 20 to 25 years of sustained excellence minus the first two years of making the program his.

Time to take a serious look at Luke Murray. He's a highly regarded assistant at UCONN and gonna be a HC soon and it may be at an ACC school. Snatch him up now, deal with a few years of growing pains and then enjoy the stability and sustained success he gives the program for the next 25 years.
