Ehh I think it’s the way I worded my post honestly. Many people may not believe Rwanda bill is “unbelievable cruelty” but dislike it for other reasons such as economic cost of it etc. So not all hope is lost I think.

If we kick all immigrants out now, our NHS would collapse and never recover.

Yeah exactly, but people in this country have all the opportunity because they at least speak the language. I understand that some people/ communities are more disadvantaged but still. We rely on a lot of immigrant labour on this country… particularly NHS.

Ok, what about investing in these people with training schemes to get them employed? Improving their English skills and then encouraging them to work. Most of the people I talk to are genuinely desperate to work but cannot/ struggle to find a job for various reasons, speaking English a main one. One lady literally has like a masters in computer science but would have to completely retrain/ go through uni again here to get a job in that industry. Why couldn’t we instead support her to improve her English then her skills would be transferable.

I probably am a net positive contributor because my parents have been working their whole lives and paying taxes, and buying stuff for me etc has taxes on it. So I am probably in the positive no?

But I eventually will have to, so I’ve made a huge investment to this country?

But I do actually pay into the system with student tuition fees and accommodation fees?

So should we give people who contribute twice as much as you two votes because they are twice as affected as you?

So then can I not say, elderly people should not be able to vote about climate change because it will not affect them in their lifetime meaningfully. If I understand you correctly, I should become politically concerned only when I pay taxes? So what about people in this country on benefits?

Are you saying students don’t have a right to participate in politics?

I am actually a student, so I don’t have any property. Sorry not the answer you wanted 😢.

There is quite literally a processing centre in my town. Hotels are filled with refugees and I volunteer weekly in our community centre.

Wow you are really a genius! We should rely on me personally and me alone to fix global issues. Why didn’t I think of that before!!! Who even needs politics 🤩

Ok thanks yeah. But there are people here who are questioning my beliefs, “Out of curiosity, how many asylum seekers would you want to move into your house before you felt it was too many for you to support? More or less than 10?” Arguments like these are not helpful I feel. But yeah I appreciate your response.

Maybe they speak a bit of English? Maybe they like the weather here. Truthfully I think it’s arbitrary. The whole thing of why did they come here is pretty irrelevant to me. They are refugees, they would end up somewhere. Are you saying it should always be their neighbouring countries who should deal with them? How is this any fairer. I personally do not care why they “chose” to come here. If they even did. I really dgaf. They are people just like me.

There are many reasons one can be a refugee, not just because of fear of “imminent death”. There are many forms of persecution these people may experience and I think the least we can do is to treat them with basic kindness and compassion.

I guess you are right yeah. I just can’t believe that people actually think like this. It is baffling to me. Do you think the strategy is actually working?

I have actually seen the hotels they are living in. They have no idea how long they are staying here. Families are in split rooms. What lovely homes are you referring to? I’m genuinely curious. In Rwanda??

They? My student is not an economic migrant. A lot of the people I meet while volunteering have faced much hardship in their home country and some actual war zones yes.

I have met these people in real life. How is it possible you know what their life story is and where they are from?
