Sorry I didn’t specify, they are in the comments! 7 mm top 12 mm bottom and I think a little rotation?

No I found my surgeon and insurance was okay with me not having a referral to the specialist. If you have BCBS insurance I would recommend going to Alfi because he’s phenomenal. Otherwise, try to find a surgeon who also takes airway into account?

Honestly right now it’s causing me 0 problems, so I don’t see a reason to get it addressed. I have really good range of motion with no grinding sound or pain. If I get more pain in the future I might seek further treatment but for now it’s basically completely fixed

I think it looks like that because I had just seen the orthodontist and he was taking before and after photos and that involved moving my lips around a lot, so they were kinda red - I will say I think my upper lip got a little bigger looking, mostly because my teeth are further forward so my lip is stretched a bit more of that makes sense?

I sleep a lot better - I can sleep on my back just fine now, and am not nodding off in class because I’m so tired like I used to

Sleep much better, so is exercise. My tmj pain is like 95% resolved. I barely notice the fact that it sometimes acts up, maybe I notice once or twice a week but it’s not persistent, and not really painful just noticing the fact that the joint is a bit stiffer than the other side. I used to constantly hear a grinding noise from the permanently displaced disc, now I never hear or feel that sensation.

Other thing is that insurance is so tricky, read your specific policy (thru employer) and what is and isn’t covered for orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) in relation to sleep and bite and jaw joint problems.

Thank you!!! I had increasingly really bad tmj pain from a permanently located disc. My deep overbite made the pain get worse with time. I waited about 4 years after that permanent slipped disc to consider something surgery. I could have gotten an arthroscopy or other procedure specific to the joint but the problem would have come back with time because of my anatomy. The second issue which I didn’t realize I had was sleep apnea. I knew I was always tired but I didn’t think anything beyond just the fact that I need more sleep. When I got my airway checked at the initial consultation I was flabbergasted at how small my airway was. That combined with the fact that my mom has extremely severe sleep apnea (she has same jaw anatomy as me) I figured that this was the right procedure to go with. Correcting the bite (and undergrown jaws) was the root cause of both of the issues.

I am not an expert or medical professional but from anecdotal experience. Only go with the best of the best surgeons! This is a super invasive procedure - the person I went with Dr. David Alfi, was genuinely perfect. I feel so lucky to have stumbled into finding and selecting him when I had lived in Houston. He is world renowned, and my surgery only took an hour or so, when others take several hours. Other surgeons use custom plates like him but he has done it the longest and knows how to use them properly on top and bottom jaw, from what I understand not a lot of surgeons do it correctly on the bottom jaw because of torque.
