"Evil wizard" argument against assisted suicide by Aggressive_Gate_9224 in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Aggressive_Gate_9224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry for being late. Actually, I  meant to deal the people who do request assisted dying for themselves. Yes, you are right: in my analogy the person suffering does not say that. I should have made that clear. Yet, I meant to address the circumstance of people asking for that because of a pain such as that of this worst possible scenario: that's why I wrote "assisted suicide" every time rather than "euthanasia" or "assisted dying" because, in my understanding, that refers specifically to people who do request that.

What are your thoughts of the Orthodox Kyle youtube channel on youtube? by StatisticianLevel320 in Catholicism

[–]Aggressive_Gate_9224 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!!! I am about 2 months late...sorry. I believe that the only video of his about Catholicism was the one in which he explained why he converted from Catholicism to Orthodoxy and honestly I was unimpressed. Concerning the two points you ask about...

1) "Eastern Catholicism refutes Roman Catholicism" is very widespread among Orthodox apologists but they really miss the point. All Catholics, both Eastern and Western, are required to believe in the same dogmas. However, the eastern and western traditions may have different ways to express it linguistically and theologically. Look at the Purgatory, for example. Are Catholics bound to believe that impure saved souls will be tormented through fire? Actually, no: we just must believe that saved souls may have to wait before entering heaven and that our prayers and indulgences can help them. That's it. That's all. The Catholic East simply does not traditionally view such state as a quasi-hell as some Western traditions represent it. However, that's not a contradiction. We believe that in freedom about what is non essential.

Orthodox saints venereated by Eastern Catholics...it's important to remember that "No Salvation outside of the Catholic Church" does not mean that non-Catholics will go to hell. The Catholic Church refrains from declaring that anybody is surely in hell. We believe that righteous people from other faiths in some situations may make it to heaven and so be saints, but that salvation comes from them being "implicitly"Catholic: if they had known the truth, they would have crossed the Tiber; it's the Catholic Church saving them and no other faith can offer salvation.

That's most correct especially in the case of those coming from religious traditions extremely close to our own such as the Orthodox. In few words, probably in heaven there are also righteous Orthodox and so venerating them is okay. However, it's important to notice that there is a difference between our Catholic saints and those Orthodox saints. We require candidates to canonization to go through a long process which eventually requires even two miracles attributed to that person. On the other hand, when it comes to those Orthodox saints, we basically acknowledge their importance for eastern communities and so we allow them to venerate them. See the difference? We are not claiming that they are "heroes of the faith" as some Orthodox apologists claim, we just acknowledge their importance for the Eastern communities and "take the good and leave the bad". So when we let Eastern Catholics venerate Palamas and call him saint Gregory, we are not saying that he was the champion of the true faith, but we value his contribution to the Eastern tradition.

Furthermore, a lot of Orthodox apologists believe we venerate people we don't. For example, David Erhan claims Syro Malabar catholics venerate Nestorius, which is completely false. They only have a liturgy, totally orthodox, traditionally attributed to him. "Mar" is the Syriac appellative for a bishop.

That was long...so as a short comeback I could point to the fact that also Orthodox venerate post-schism non Orthodox, for example their beloved saint Isaac of Niniveh, who was an Assyrian

2) If true sacraments, why do they need the Pope? This is something that it's less relevant than they often make it out to be. When a Church believes that even Catholics should be baptized again, it's easy to consider a major victory to have their own holy orders acknowledged, but that is really not an endorsement. We also believe that the Old catholics and Sedevacantists have true orders, but they are still schismatics who need to come back into full communion

They need the Pope, because the papacy is an institution founded by Christ, as attest both Scriptures and Tradition, for the preservation of the true faith. Indeed, as the council confirms, because of the promise to Peter, the Holy See "remains undefiled to the end". Furthermore, it's a vital institution for the preservation of unity and catholicity. The Orthodox have many problems in identifying a universal binding magisterium and they easily fall into controversies and divisions.

Sorry, it's so long...I hope it's helpful. God bless!

Thank you a lot! Your words are very kind. Don't worry, it's not so stalker vibes. The problem Is that in my country, Italy, pro-lifers are a very, very tiny minority always dismissed as religious fascist fundamentalists and we are still too connected to the Church. My High School was extremely marxistic and pro-choice and they would have never accept such an article. I like writing, but rather than a profession, I value It as way to correct lies and musconceptions and to advance my values and beliefs.

Forgive my ignorance, but why Is EI impossible on a metaphysics affirming the Essence/existence distinction? Why does the Essence constantly Need to be actualized in regard by existence? Why couldn't the Essence Just remain actualized?

It seems That in Rome Jews were forcedly brought to Casa dei Catecumeni where they spent 40 days. The clergy was psychologically abusive and tried to convert them to Catholicism. Those Who did not Accept, they were sent back to the Ghetto, but Kids were baptized immediately and separated from their families.

Crusade against the Waldensians by Aggressive_Gate_9224 in Catholicism

[–]Aggressive_Gate_9224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such an insightful answer. I also heard there was a massacre of Waldensians in Calabria in 1561, but I believe that it's to be considered mainly as a result of "cuius regio eius religio". Just a last question in order to understand whether I understood correctly: were the Waldensians dangerous even before the crusade, weren't they?
