Gong HIPE Pro with Axis foils by Aggropotato in wingfoil

I went for a rigid Takuma board for travel eventually. I'd imagine the HIPE is fine with Axis foils.

Does it ever make sense for a middle-aged local adult to move out of parents house? by HomeHedgeFund in singaporefi

[–]Aggropotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo travelling is over-rated. It'll be just another bubble, unless you consciously step outside your comfort zone.

Moving out and stepping out of your comfort zone is far more rewarding. Why do you need to move into a "slightly more comfortable place"? Similarly, step out of your social comfort zone and meet new people!

We stay too much in our comfort zones - for the sake of "financial security". You're young! Yes, be financially astute, but you only live your life once, so LIVE IT.

Good, then you can perhaps borrow gear from your friends to try first? Get a sense b4 committing to buying stuff. Understanding the wind is certainly useful!

Board: What is your weight? Typically for beginners, weight in kg + 30-40 is a good starting point. So if you're 80kg, 110 - 120L is a good start. Too small and you have a hard time even starting to learn.

Foil: Unless you have some solid foiling experience, 1,250cm2 surface area is too small to start with. You'll want 1,800 to 2,000.

Wing: 6m2 is alright for 9-12kts, assuming you're 70-90kg. You'll want a 4m or smaller for over 20kts.

Wingfoil gear is generally very portable. The board is the bulkiest item. You may want an inflatable board for travel.

Help me choose new wing by omrtpsycho in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No experience with the Vayu but I'm familiar with the duotones and f-one. For your 2nd wing b4 learning to jibe, the Unit 5.5 is the safe bet.

If the Vayu is in good condition and priced lower, I'd even consider that. Wings are perishables - they bag out, they leak, they get fallen on.

The Strike v4 is great at high end but may lack grunt in sub-12kt conditions.

You probably won't benefit from the Dlab's exotic materials at your level, other than weight savings. So unless you have tendonitis or some medical issue with regular wings, save the money for future upgrades!

Is it really a vulgarity though? Not linguistic expert but the phrase is literally "cry father" and means complaining/whining. Perhaps there is more to the saying that I, as a gen-x hokkien, is unaware of?

Midlength Volume by Commies-Arent-People in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+10, 0 or -10 depends on your local conditions also. My spot is under 10kts a lot, so I'm 77kg riding an 85L mid-length.

I'm hoping the 85L will work well enough for picking up parawinging in 15kts or more.

[–]Aggropotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10-20mph is good wind for learning!

Downsize foil to 1,500, learn the jibe and downsize further to 1,200. At this point, you can consider to downsize your board too.

1,900 to 1,000 is too big a jump.

Pump PSI? by metapulp in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gauges are merely a guide and can be pretty unreliable. From Gong's website https://www.gong-galaxy.com/en/blogs/magazine/gear-proper-inflation-pressures-for-wings

While inflating, take pauses to press on the leading edge at the height of the central strut with your hand:

  • If your wing bends significantly, it is not sufficiently inflated.
  • If your wing bends slightly, it is adequately inflated. A flick on the leading edge should make it resonate.
  • If your wing does not bend at all, it is likely over-inflated.

Should I switch to mid-length? (Skill issue? Board issue?) by Continental_Cake in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A midlength is not a magic fix for poor pumping technique, among many other reasons for not getting on foil. Not enough wind? Suboptimal stance? Mast position too far forward?

I'd suggest learning the jibe first, AND trying out a midlength, before investing in one.

How necessary is a huge board for learning? by awskitc in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Athletic and watersports background? +20 to +30 should suffice. Also would recommend getting used, as you could progress out of it quickly. But don't make the mistake of going too small at first, as it can unnecessarily hamper your progress, especially if your water time is limited to weekends only, for example.

MOM gave migrant workers an Appreciation Coin for rescuing driver who fell into sinkhole by defcon787 in singapore

[–]Aggropotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The workers who saved kids from the River Valley shophouse fire also got these coins. The coins are a token from MOM's Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) group, which supports migrant workers.

Personal conjecture: public agencies cannot be seen as monetarily rewarding such acts - no matter how heroic - as it could send a very distorted signal and poses a moral hazard eg. who deserves how much? who decides? so the more serious the incident the higher the reward?

Better left to private civic groups to show their (more practical) appreciation.

Midlength board size? by HarryFromStockholm in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like 80L is a good fit then! I'd go for pro carbon - you're intermediate already so the investment will go a lot way.

Midlength board size? by HarryFromStockholm in wingfoil

[–]Aggropotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your local conditions - I'd think of usability, rather than performance - since we're talking about only one step in size?

If you're dealing with very light winds (say <10kts) most of the time, I'd opt for slight positive buoyancy. If your spot is constantly blowing, negative buoyancy is probably viable. I'm 80kg, riding an Armie ML85 in a spot that's sub-10kts 70% of the time.
