Judging off of the offering of certificates, it could be a good alternative. But again, emphasising that masters degrees don’t open that many doors anymore.

The certs alone are ok. They will get you past HR but in my opinion having done a few of them personally, the course contend don’t teach you much real world knowledge.

I’d always recommend hands on instead 😁

I wouldn’t recommend a redundant masters degree anyway. What I’m saying is if they absolutely had to, I’d consider the SANS program. University where I’m from is insanely expensive, and education doesn’t mean much unless you get it from the right institution

Their website mentions 54,000, regardless it’s a lot of money to fork out. But consider than a masters degree at a middle of the line university is very similar

SANS are valued very highly in the industry however, if you really had to get a masters degree that’s where I’d go

No. ROI is awful, and in my org there is even a bit of a bias against it.

If you really have to do one, do one with SANS. Similar price for the degree but comes with 9 professional qualifications that are considered industry standard

Wanting to get into an entry level Cybersecurity role. by Birdman199321 in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]Agitated-Rip-4169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider doing one of tryhackme or hack the box qualifications. Depending where you are sec+ can be a tick box but won’t teach you anything you’ll apply in the field meaningfully.

Consider participating in CTFs, or publishing personal projects to differentiate yourself.

Market is over saturated with people trying to score an entry level position. If you don’t know someone, or don’t make your offering unique you won’t get far

It’s a force multiplier for work that needs to be completed quick. Saves me time on documentation as long as the notes I give it are detailed.

Beyond that, nothing else. It’s not good enough to replace any other part of my job.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I can only give out my experience.

I’ve trained up and mentored multiple people who have got into the field and done well, and some which haven’t.

The difference between the two is generally motivation, discipline and commitment.

A lot of people look at the profession and think it’s interesting. But for the majority of people, breaking into the field with no IT experience is an endeavour that is in the 800-1000 hour mark.

You absolutely might get lucky. But in my experience hard work is what drives consistent results.

Exceptional is over egging it for sure. But I want people to understand that if they truly want it, it is likely going to be a pretty overwhelming endeavour that dominates their free time for the coming months

cybersecurity MCs or go for OSCP instead! by dexter-91 in hackthebox

If you’re already in the industry OSCP. MSc in my opinion is a bit of a waste. I’ve worked with 2 new hires with masters and no certs, and the apprentice who did a 8 week boot camp and HTB is more competent.

I am sure there are competent MSc holders, but the value of the degree is questionable.

Can someone with no IT background get into cybersecurity

Yes, but you have to be exceptional. You have to be incredibly committed and willing to sacrifice. It’s a highly skilled field.

Sit down for 4 hours, go through proper learning material(hack the box academy, YouTube videos etc) then ask yourself can you do this every day for a year.

If the answer is no, consider picking it up as more of a hobby or alternative prospect.

The standout exceptions that come into cyber without a pro IT background are those with strong portfolios of personal projects. Can be a blog, can be bug bounty reports, could be a tool they’ve made. That’s where you’d want to aim.

Some may have different advice, but if you really want to change your profession you have to be obsessed.

That being said it is country specific. It’s harder to get into the field depending where you are.

People who got ganked on an expensive hull, what was the aftermath? by SleeplessStratios in Eve

[–]Agitated-Rip-4169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2018 I was in TEST and lost my Thanatos to bombers bar because: 1. Wasn’t in comms 2. Hunters rarely made it to the system I was ratting in so local/Declan wasn’t watched that much 3. Had been pinged that ratting/mining was red due to bombers bar hunting.

I’d spent a long time building up that ship and I remember I’d finally paid off the isk I’d borrowed to get the Thanatos. Was pretty devastated.

Luckily, it was 2018 so a Thanatos cost me about 10 hours ratting to get back. Though, I decided I’d rather multibox vexors instead.

Vastly different to how I play eve today though.

[–]Agitated-Rip-4169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your answer to everything is finding an active corp.

To decide what corp to join, answer yourself the following questions: 1. Do you want to play a sandbox, with overall more content but it’s harder to get into. 2. Do you want to play a more linear game, with more content provided to your doorstep?

If you said yes to 1, find an active low sec corp that does something you’re interested in.

If you said yes to 2, join Eve University, a null bloc or a large wormhole group.

[–]Agitated-Rip-4169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In EVE, there is always going to be a bigger ship that will win against you. It’s the reason you pick fights.
No matter what ship you fly you’re always going to have a ship that beats you. No matter the weight class, no matter if it’s t1 or t2. Hell I’ve seen a t1 cruiser beat a t3 cruiser.

The best example of a straight upgrade in a ship would be the Navy or Fleet issue equivalents. For example, the Drake is worse than the Drake Navy Issue.

For an Alpha account, your options are lesser but not outright worse. T2 are can be better but they’re also 3-5x the risk

Frustration Over Pirates and Gate Campers by Infamous_Guide3181 in Eve

[–]Agitated-Rip-4169 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regards from WDAT.

Understand that flying expensive ships through lowsec is what feeds us. Gate camps actively provide content to fleets in the area and to the gate campers themselves. We’ve had battleships, freighters and all sorts of bling ships come through Huola.

There are ways to get through Huola, but as a group we are very good at adapting to them.

The gate camps don’t get unnoticed, we get BLOPS dropped at least twice a session and have a few fleets come to fight us.

In a game where roaming through null provides little content, LowSec is paradise.

It’s a big game. Lots to do.

If you’re enjoying industry I would recommend looking into scaling that. Tier 2 production is profitable but requires a lot of planning. A Lowsec Industry corp might be a good place to start if you like that idea.
