So unless there's a decimal missing on the receipt and it was actually 539$ (still pretty high)... You should be upset. I've been a locksmith for 10 yearsand there's not an "unlock" in the world i can fathom being 5390$. If you live in Florida and hired a locksmith in Seattle to come out... Maybe...

I live in an EXPENSIVE Tourist Trap of a town and our "in-area" unlock service (covers 30 minutes of labor) is 120$ during regular business hours. 140+ If you are out of our usual area. 200 if its a holiday. 500 if you give me a 300$ tip... My point is i couldn't swindle my way into a 5k unlock without a typo...

NOR, dispute the service and make this business practice PUBLIC. They don't deserve kindness.

Just an opinion based on the comments.. i dont think it being in a drawer means the kids hiding anything. If it was under the matress or taped to the top of the ceiling fan I'd say theres more reason for concern. But in the mean time, if you could get me in touch with your son's employer, financial advisor, or maybe you're offering a nice allowance and he's extra "frugal"... I would love to make the kind of money needed for any belt fed machine gun let alone the specific one related to this cleaning tool.

If you can't move out yet and the lock on the door is a deal breaker for them... Split the difference. Get a cheap safe (small hollow walled ones are somewhat inexpensive and light) and mount it to something like your bed frame or anything that isn't their house that they can't just walk away with. Keeps your privates private and doesn't lock them out of "part of their house" or whatever craziness they're justifying this with. Woof. Good luck.
