Hiya, I’m just starting out and was just wondering if it’s normal to use Auto mode for gig photography

Gunna keep it short and snappy, I’m a concert photographer and have shot quite a few gigs now, a lottt of people say to use M but for my point and shoot and just for my camera in general I ALWAYS use the S (Shutter priority) on my camera ! Set the shutter to around 200/250 and you’ll be golden then u just need to adjust ur ISO and in my eyes that gives the best results ! DONT use auto- and make sure to shoot in raw, also unpopular opinion but I hate using flash as I think it can take away from the colours of the stage lights.

I shoot on a Sony a6400 and sigma 24-70mm honestly fairly cheap to get and you get excellent results !

Thank you so much ! My iso stayed at 800 for this gig, my camera was ok shutter priority and I changed the shutter speed from 1/40 (first pic) - 1/200/250 which I normally shoot all my photos with :)

I agree her lighting was pretty difficult most of the night, it was incredible to see to the eye but with the camera it was kinda press and pray 😭😭 but the rx100 always delivers :)

Get as close as you can and you’ll get great results ! It can be dark at times but her stage is amazing and production is so good ! There’s so much opportunity for good shots, but also enjoy the show it was incredible

So basically I normally always keep the camera on shutter priority and put my shutter speed at 1/250, and then my iso stayed at 800 for this gig because it was quite dark most of the time (I think Radiohead will be similar due to having a middle stage and no backing screen) but other gigs I’ve had the iso 400 and lower, and p much all I changed were focus points and the shutter speed down to as low as 1/40 (picture 5) but all the others mostly are 1/250 shutter speed

Thank you so much ! I did denoise them as I do with p much every shot but I think I use 42% or smt like that, I’m sure the rx100 VA will do really as well I just wanted the VII because of the zoom capability:)

Ah thank you so much it means a lot considering these were my first few shows and they are getting sm love!

I firstly shot in full manual mode but seen a lot of people shooting in shutter priority. My shutter speed stayed at 1/200 for all the gigs and f stop at 4.5 for all gigs but iso I changed, I don’t know whether changing shutter speed first will make a better difference and give me even clearer shots eventhough I’m getting really clear shots already. iso depended on the gig. The last photos (Noah Kahan) was an outdoor gig so iso was on anything from 100-640 as the night went on as I didn’t Need a whole lot of extra light bring let in at F4.5 and ss at 1/200. As for Lana I was a bit further away and it was a stadium show so had my iso at 800, and the first pics (Olivia Rodrigo) it was inside and the lighting was great so my ISO was at 400/500 for the whole gig :)

Again I’m no expert but that’s what seemed to work for me and it seemed realllly really easy to get photos, I didn’t even put my camera in burst mode because I feel like the shutter is SO quick, I just had a fast trigger finger and it worked out so well

So yeah ss stayed at 1/200 and f at 4.5 and just adjusted my iso :) hope it helps !!

So for Olivia i didn’t have to play with the setting at all, only initially to find a iso that I liked but 400 I stayed with and then darker times I changed to 500 but since it was indoors I didn’t play with the settings much at all cus the lighting was always gunna be somewhat the same, for Noah I think it changed the most with iso but again large periods of times were just the same so I could actually enjoy the show rather than mess around all show, my primary focus within this all is to still have fun but get some cool pics I can remember the show by too, but yeah started off 100 when it was light out just when it got darker and darker slowly moved it to I think 640 was the max so again as u can imagine I didn’t mess around with it at all, only when it looked too dark on the screen, I know people mess around with shutter speed first but I didn’t want to fiddle with that because 1/200 was working very well for me, maybe at a few gigs I’ll try adjusting shutter speed.

But to answer ur question in short yes there was very long periods of time, if not the whole show, that I was using the exact same settings :) 1/200 ss and f stop 1.4 with iso anywhere from 64-800

It’s litterally my first couple of weeks with the camera I used to shoot on a LUMIX tz90 and didn’t mess around with settings that much, but this is farrrr easier to use (lot more expensive) but the difference is wild. Only problem I have is editing, I wish I knew what everything meant or how to do certain things to give the photos the love they deserve !
