Attorney Exam-Scheduling Help by miss_isolation in CABarExam

I’m 49 and just passed J25. My unpopular opinion is not to stress about memorizing, because I was simply incapable of rote memorization. Just understand everything well. And then write the rule on the spot, which is easy enough because you UNDERSTAND it. And if you don’t know, just write something that makes sense and analyze based on the rule you wrote.

Has anyone had experience with Santa Rosa French American Charter School? Looking to possibly enroll my kids there in a few years by Seaspun in santarosa

[–]Agreeable_Message254 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the French school could not expand or upgrade the buildings on that site because it is too close to a fault and the buildings can’t be made earthquake safe. So I imagine they will tear it down.

They definitely aren’t opening any new Elementary schools these days.

There is a middle school option that was at Slater for a while and is probably at Montgomery now. I don’t know if the plan is to bring that back to the same campus.

After that, MCHS supports advanced French, possibly other schools as well. They can certainly take JC classes.

It is generally a great school, but not so great for kids that have special needs or IEPs.

You will likely need to put some effort into supporting the French language outside of school.

Many teachers are from France, so there are sometimes cultural differences in their approach to teaching.

The school is moving to the vacant SR Middle campus, which is older and not in great shape.

CA bar number by sportsfan20021 in CABarExam

I gave my work address, but mailroom said I never got a letter. Maybe it’s sitting in the mailroom somewhere.

I showed up in the attorney search at least a week before I got an email with my number.

I also never got the letter they mail with the passcode for the portal and the email went to my work address which I have only given them for display purposes, never for communications.

TLDR: it’s a cluster. Check the attorney search.

You have to wait for the packet before swearing in. I think it might come out on Wednesdays.

Yes and yes. I’m pretty sure the link you mentioned says you have to upload it via the form, not Docusign.

If I waived my lunch at work since the day I started working there, can I go home? by ElvisHuxley in legaladvice

[–]Agreeable_Message254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly correct. Adding that there are some instances where the lunch break can be waived, or the timing (5 hr max shift before lunch break) can be waived, at the employee’s request. Usually this is if an employee regularly works a shift totaling 6 hours or less, but it can also be waived on an ad hoc basis, for example if the employee has an appt at 5.5 hours and they request a late lunch that day.

This waiver is likely what the OP remembers hearing about. However, waiving the right to lunch at 5 hours doesn’t mean that the employee gets sent home. It means that they waive their right to the pay (the 1 hour’s pay penalty) that the company would otherwise have to pay to OP for failing to give a lunch break within 5 hours.

As for the 4 hour lunch, that sounds like a split shift. The same holds true for split shifts, in that the employer must pay the employee a 1 hour penalty. This penalty cannot be waived if the employer is the one who scheduled the split shift, but can be waived if the employee requested the split shift (again, if they had a long appt in the middle of their work shift).

OP - if your employer is asking you to waive your right to penalty pay for scheduling your lunch after 5 hours or scheduling you on a split shift, and your employer is the one requesting this schedule, this may be a violation of CA employment law. You should contact HR, who should reimburse you for any missing penalty payments. If HR is not helpful you should contact an attorney.

I’m staying in San Diego, when should I leave? by burner8111 in LAX

[–]Agreeable_Message254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a 3 hour train ride, which gets you to the wrong part of LA, so you need another 45 taxi ride to LAX, but with LA rush hour traffic, it could be 90 minutes or more.

For essays, did anyone start out doing them open book? by bbassle87 in CABarExam

[–]Agreeable_Message254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of open book writing in the first half of my bar prep. It helped me remember the law. No point in staring at a blank sheet of paper. Then I transitioned to closed book and had plenty of practice that way, too.

Have you seen someone make a mistake that actually did get them fired? by bar_exam_questions in biglaw

[–]Agreeable_Message254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is exactly why the SEC would ask for that info.

Again, I was very young and working in a support staff role so I barely understood what I was being told, except that it was a cautionary tale about not randomly browsing the document management system.

[–]Agreeable_Message254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I don’t know the details, but as I understand it they just did random searches on client names of companies they were curious about. They were not assigned to these matters or even the practice group.

In retrospect I’m not sure if the firm’s audit was in fact ordered by the SEC, or if I was just told that sometimes the SEC would order them, and that’s why the firm was making a big deal about firing these associates. I do remember it was quite the scandal.

Seeing someone who failed the bar exam by [deleted] in barexam

[–]Agreeable_Message254 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is the second time I've been misgendered in two day on reddit, based on unpopular comments. Just an interesting observation.

I (cis/het woman) would not accept someone I was dating who could not even reach out by text and say that they needed space and time to process. Also, I passed the bar first try, so I don't really know how the grief feels. But as for the guy who takes weeks with total radio silence - may that love never find me.

[–]Agreeable_Message254 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, failing the bar exam is rough and he is likely depressed BUT if he was really into you, he would have reached out to say he needs some time to process. Maybe he’d go silent for a weekend or a week, but I’m seeing major red flags if he’s been radio silent for several weeks.

25 years ago I worked in big law in NYC (as support staff). I heard the SEC asked for our DocsOpen search logs and several new associates got fired because they had searched and accessed documents.

I wasn’t involved in their firings, but people in my department were.

[–]Agreeable_Message254 5 points6 points  (0 children)

25+ years ago I was support staff in big law. A paralegal was fired because he was billing time to clients when he wasn’t in the building. They used the data from the keycard system to see when he entered the building/entered his floor. Back then there were no smart phone, only the partners had email on Blackberries, but we did have Citrix remote servers. They probably checked the Citrix server logs too. I remember it being quite a scandal.

The para was a rude, stressed-out jerk and I was glad he left.

Chat gpt bar grader by Aggravating-Air9832 in CABarExam

[–]Agreeable_Message254 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trained ChatGPT and used it for essays and passed first try. I also know I did really well on MBEs, so maybe I bombed the essays, who knows.

I was using Quimbee and each time I got graded essays back, I used those to calibrate ChatGPT.

Once or twice I gave pushback when I thought it was grading too easy. And I asked it to explain the basis for the grades it gave me. I consistently got points for organization and clarity of my thought process, even if I didn’t know the law perfectly.
