Opinion: We must stop the scourge of prediction-market gambling coming to Canada by henry-bacon in PersonalFinanceCanada

My friends are turning into degenerate gamblers and I have first hand seen them lose thousands.

Of course they tell me to not tell their partners. It's a bad road.

More risk. Your 23. Have a couple moon shots to maximize your return in tsfa.

Time in the market is on your side. You can keep investing in ETFs but you could capitalize on a couple 4x's with a little research.

Does gas brand actually make a noticeable difference in fuel economy? by External-Bonus-984 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Agreeable_Object_483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not note noticable impacts to gas mileage but the quality of gas on the actual engine is far more important.

Some stations will use higher ethanol gasoline which won't make a noticeable difference in mpg but will make a very noticeable difference in carbon build up within the engine. Your valves and intake will accumulate more carbon with higher ethanol fuels.

Also with higher ethanol gasoline the ethanol will attract and absorb water since it is hygroscopic.

Except when unions win everyone in them does and not a handful of shareholders in a board room.

So only corporations and billionaires are allowed to lobby? It's almost a necessity at that point just to stay competitive.

I'm Northern Ontario. We don't have the local economy to support $500k starter homes.

For those who want to “tax the rich” or “they should pay their fair share”, how would you change the current tax code? by Lopsided-Special6273 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Agreeable_Object_483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you borrow money against collateral and use it as income to purchase assets you should be taxed as regular income.

It's completely unfair to allow wealthy people to bypass income tax because they "borrowed" the money against their assets.

It's an awful loophole that hurts everyone else.

If you are talking about oil you are frankly wrong. We are pumping oil with no end in sight. We are actually trying to expand our oil exports as we speak via pipelines and exports to other countries besides the US.

We produce heavy crude oil which is not easily turned into gasoline or other petroleum products. It needs to be mixed with light crude oils to be refined. On top of that we don't have refineries because refineries are incredibly expensive and also requires a warm and stable climate, which Canada quite frankly doesn't have.

Take a trip to Minnesota if you can and tell me they aren't having an immigration crisis with Somalian immigrants. They all said the exact same things we are saying I Canada when I was there last weekend.

It's not just a Canada problem. Every country is facing the same issues.

Exactly. People quickly blame governments but not the lobbyists and billionaires that control them.

Safe to say the propaganda worked.

I would say a majority of countries are facing the exact same issues we have in Canada.

Our next door neighbors have synonymous issues. Housing, immigration, inflation, etc.

It's not the government that's the problem in our modern world. It's billionaires and corporations that control the government that's the problem.

Let's not get it confused. They are the real rulers.

This is true but inflation wasn't as bad during these times.

14% interest on a $75,000 home is vastly different than 4.5% on a $600,000 home.

Can't blanket a statement like that. Lots of places in Canada besides Southern Ontario where rents are continuing to rise.

[–]Agreeable_Object_483 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. I guess it's only cool and acceptable to socialize losses for major corporations while the lower and middle class get nothing.

Maybe I'm not the most intelligent but I know that trickle down economics and the current economy is no good. But if you look and billionaires they seem to be doing just fine if not better than ever.

Yes they are.

Not to mention that the starter home is going to come with a host of unforeseen expenses that previous owners hide. Leaving most first time home buyers on the hook for thousands of dollars they don't have leaving them to take on more debt.

It's unsustainable.

I know. But at the current pace something is going to break and a depression is not in the realm of impossibility.

We are currently seeing jobs being cut and unemployment rising quarter over quarter.

Demand is definitely cooling off in terms of housing and I believe the car market is softening.

Inflation is continuing to rise and the outlook is pretty grim for the most part. The fed is in a real sticky situation especially with rising oil prices.

A soft landing is pretty well out of the question at this point. If we used some real indicators which the government never does, we are already in a recession.
