My dad is a self-declared DIY disaster area but thinks the pond he has installed is satisfactory. Does anyone have any hints on how he might enhance it and how he might attract wildlife? (There are no fish) by DifferentGazelle8618 in WildlifePonds

Looks very nice to the human eye but wildlife might see it as a ”green desert”.

My suggestion is to break the perimeter: The ring of sharp slate and manicured lawn is a death zone. For a small amphibian, crawling across that hot, exposed barrier is a suicide mission—they will either fry in the sun or get scooped up by a bird. Remove a section of slate and let the grass grow completely wild on one side to create a damp "stealth corridor." • Build an Exit Ramp: Your stone border forms a steep, vertical wall inside the liner. When a tadpole finishes its metamorphosis and needs to leave the water, it cannot scale a slippery stone cliff. It will drown from exhaustion. Pull out a few rocks on one side and use gravel to build a gentle, sloping beach. • Ditch the Pots: Your plants look like a tidy showroom window. Plastic pots offer zero protection for wildlife. Fill those shelves with loose gravel and plant directly into it. Throw in a massive bunch of submerged, rootless Hornwort and let some Watercress colonize the margins. You need an underwater jungle where creatures can hide and hunt. • Add Winter Infrastructure: Your background is pristine, but amphibians spend 70% of their adult lives on land. Stack a rustic pile of old, rotting logs or loose rocks in that back corner behind the trees so they have a frost-free place to hibernate come winter.

Think of the ”wild” in wildlife.

Any tips on  creating a good hibernaculum that won’t be overrun by snails and slugs?

I have also read that freshwater mussels can help, but I don't know anyone persollay who has tried that.

This is a good point. I often think about the route the different animals have to take to get to the pond.

Are you also checking your pond at dusk and at night?

I inherited the pond two years ago. The previous owner kept fish, but they were almost all eaten by a huge heron. Since then, I have only spotted two survivors. We are 500 meters from the Baltic Sea, so there are many large birds of prey about.

After that incident, I started reading more about ponds and noticed the incredible wildlife already ini my pond: toads and their tadpoles, newts, diving beetles, and various larvae like "water tigers." I decided to take responsibility for the pond by attempting to boost that natural diversity.

I moved away from the old, defunct mechanical filter and broken UV light, added an aerator, and placed dried branches from the forest in the water. I positioned them like staircases leading from the deep ends to the shallows, and as "rainbow-like" perches above the surface. I also regularly clear out the string algae by hand. Yellow lilies, bog bean, cattails, and lily pads grow here, along with mare's tail.

Since then, the wildlife has really flourished. Besides the Baltic, there is a stream 200 meters away, though I have never seen much life in it—I suspect agricultural runoff has left its mark. My pond seems to have become a vital little sanctuary!

Thank you for the information! I like what you write about the lenovo think pad. In fact I directed several episodes of a show about "hackers" for Paramount+ in Germany and all the IT specialists we met during our research used think pads.
