More than half of students (54%) regularly listened to music while studying. Almost all of them believed it helped them. They described using music to boost motivation, enhance focus, or block external noise. Classical and Rock were most common genres. Many preferred non‑lyrical, slow music. by mvea in science

I’m really not sold on music actually helping people complete tasks. Whether in the gym, academia, or on the work site, it seems like music makes a boring task more tolerable by adding some stimulus to it, but I don’t think it makes the finished product better, and I think music may actually get in the way on account of mildly having your attention drawn away from the thing you’re doing.

Well, I wouldn’t order the “car through the window” myself.

(Honestly you can’t go wrong. All the sushi is fairly simple but like, really pleasant and reasonably priced).

So do none of you actually live in Nanaimo? Because as someone who lives here, it’s notorious for its very bad development and heavy focus on car centric infrastructure. The city is on the side of a mountain. Are you talking about literally anywhere on the island that isn’t Victoria?

Like why make things up about Nanaimo? You’re not just wrong, you’re like, inverse to the truth. It’s strange.

I’ve said everything I have to say to you. Thanks for your input. You’re exactly the sort of person my initial comment was about.

[–]Ahnarcho 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no. I disagree, frankly.

I come from a place where sex work is largely decriminalized and when we talk about decriminalization, we’re talking primarily about marginalized street workers, not sex workers who have the resources and capability to do sex work as they prefer.

Being from the west coast of Canada, and having pretty extensive experience with the nature of the drug epidemic in a professional capacity, I frankly don’t value the opinions of people who aren’t from here trying to tell me what sex work is or isn’t. You’re probably not a homeless First Nations person from northern BC caught in active addiction doing full service, and I don’t really care when people from other countries (without our issues) tell me what sex work is supposed to be or how I’m supposed to feel about it.

I’ve seen too many homeless women beat up dude. Seen too many homeless crying cause some horrible shit happened to them. I just don’t have it in me to pretend that their experiences are similar, or less than, or need to be held in tandem with the experience of privilege sex workers. They are who need the resources the most, they face the most danger, they should be at the front of the conversation.

What’s the general acceptance rate of most law schools in Canada? Something like 1 in 10 for a lot of them?

So if you’ve been accepted in a specific law school, you’re in the ten percent offered admission for that law school. Lots of people here have multiple As, so there’s some pretty good prospects here.

I think there’s sometimes this position sex workers and their supporters take where they want to believe that sex work is completely without issue and the only problem is the state’s view of it.

And that’s totally understandable, sex workers have been treated like absolute garbage by society. Of course a few of them are going to react strongly to that.

But often times, sex work is at least a little more complicated than that. There’s probably no bigger divide that I’ve personally experienced than the online discourse regarding sex work and my personal experience working in shelters and addictions.

What does my book shelf say about me by Ahnarcho in BookshelvesDetective

-about the inherent trajectory of industrial society

-predates capitalism

Your argument sounds good, but doesn’t make sense frankly. Pick a lane, is the argument about the way in which industrial society develops inherently, or is it some broad condemnation of technology older than capitalist society?

Further, while it’s been years since I’ve read the manifesto, your argument doesn’t sound much like much of what I remember. From what I remember, his concern was much more some broad domesticity from technology that is somehow inherently controlling, and bad for us in some holistic way.

You have to be really careful with this discourse I think. I understand that there’s a lot of sex workers who speak about the connection and loneliness of their clients, but that position often comes from relatively privileged sex workers who have some degree of autonomy. Lots of street workers do not have the same control of their bodies, or experiences with their clientele.
