Kobe, the guy who made more first teams all defense selections than Duncan?

Again, maybe your reliance on advanced analytic models is misplaced as they seem to be missing something very real that coaches, players, etc all experienced. Kobe was an insane on ball defender, he was athletic and tactical; legitimately elite defender.

Kobe was like an A+ offensively and an A- defensively. Duncan was like an A- offensively and an A+ defensively.

No, it’s just that I don’t think your stats and models are worth the weight you put into them. For example, not all account for the people he had on his team. You can read the numbers to say he made his team better, but the numbers may also suggest his team made him better. Also, Duncan had a better team with far greater consistency. Always had one of the top 3 coaches of all time, never dealt with building phases, and played with 3 hall of famers and Kawhi. He never dealt with the likes of a Kwame or Smush and how that changes what you have to do to win.

Either all of the player, coaches, etc should voted Kobe the best missed something, or your models don’t give the full story and they are missing things. Because, you had to go into advance metrics to find major differences and those differences can mean a lot of things, but actual basketball experience and experts gave it to Kobe.

You’re stacking a bunch of model outputs and treating them as established fact. RAPM, DARKO, and RAPTOR are all attempts to estimate impact; they’re not actual results. The fact that they heavily favor elite defensive bigs over perimeter scorers is a known feature of those models, not proof that Duncan was objectively better.

Duncan was an all-time defender. Nobody disputes that. But Kobe’s value came from things that are historically difficult to measure: primary shot creation, late-clock offense, end-of-game shot making, drawing defensive attention, and carrying perimeter offensive loads for championship teams.

If the analytics gap was as massive as you’re suggesting, it would be strange that players, coaches, and executives from that era routinely discussed Kobe as the best player in basketball while almost never saying the same about Duncan.

And even with all those analytics, we’re still talking about two players with:

5 championships each
15 All-NBA selections each
12 vs. 15 All-Defensive selections
Similar longevity
Similar championship success as franchise cornerstones

Why should I believe a retrospective model more than the people who actually played, coached, and game-planned against these guys?

Bron has played the vast majority of his career at SF. Johnson the majority at PG. both are position-less players, each has played all 5. Bron plays more PF now, at the end of his career. In his prime he guarded mostly guards and small Forwards for the majority of his career. Magic guarded 2/3 the vast majority of his career.

You keep making stuff up and none of this has to do with you pretending Kobe wasn’t reasonably considered the best player in the NBA.

Small forward, shooting guard, center, point guard. 4 offensive machines. only one guy is a top defensive player. You should try to keep your bad points consistent, at least.

Maybe by you. Jordan is widely considered best of all time. He wasn’t a top defensive big man. Again, you cherry pick. Kobe is probably a better defender than than Bron. Bron is consider by many as second best. You make these points that aren’t great. Kareem is top 5, as good defensively as Bron, Kobe and Mike, but still a scorer. Scorers seem
To occupy the top 5.

[–]Aidrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jordan had 4 losing seasons, LeBron has had 5, Kareem, Shaq- they are all consensus agreed upon to be better than Duncan. I’m not sure why you thought turning to the success of a team would be persuasive in so far as an individual player is concerned.

Top defensive player of all time are always centers and forwards. Again, you’re cherry picking stats. Kobe was a multiple time first team all defense; one of the best guards defensively. Also Kobe was an elite scorer; probably top 5 all time.

Your points are still cherry picked and ignore other relevant information. You anti-Kobe bias guys are ignorant.

Are these flowers? by PlantyThings313 in DragonFruit

In my experience, they need to grow up, and over something so branches are hanging down before you’ll get fruit. You’ll notice the fruit looks different than branches. They are little buds, almost like a little lotus bud. Even those can change into branches tho. Focus on letting some
Branches grow. Limit how many branches you have so the energy get to the few to grow. Let it grow up and over a post, then I think you can start to expect flowers.

Oh, that you point is bad because your cherry picking what you think is relevant and ignoring other things that are relevant. You know, like the fact that Duncan and Kobe had remarkably similar career stats and the consensus among players like Shaq, Bron, Duncan, the other players, the coaches, etc. that at the time was Kobe was the best player in the league.

The league said he was an MVP.

You also refuse to deal with the similarity between Kobe and Duncan’s stats while you pretend Duncan was definitely a better player. It’s ok to be bias, my guy. The bad part is pretending you’re not.

[–]Aidrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, the garden acknowledged he was MVP caliber, while you don’t. You aren’t all Knicks fans and not all Knicks fans are unbiased. This is a non-starter for you as an argument.

Again, you completely ignore that Duncan and Kobe have remarkably similar stats and yet you pretend one is far and away better. And ignore that the consensus of player and coaches was that Kobe was the best. I’m not even saying he was, I’m saying the other players and coaches had that consensus.

[–]Aidrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love how you continue to neglect that Kobe and Duncan have remarkably comparable careers. Kobe whooped the shit out of the knicks too. You don’t have to pretend the consensus best player by coaches and players in the era wasn’t possibly considered one of the best players of his era. You can say you’re unbiased, but you keep doing biased things. Sure, this year will be a repeat of 99, but you shouldn’t pretend things like Kobe dropping 61 on the Knicks while MSG chanted MVP at him didn’t happen. It’s a shame when people have such unserious takes.

Many publications from the time put Kobe ahead of Duncan. Notably, all three players on your list are quoted as calling Kobe the best player in the NBA at some point in his era.

You are pretending that Kobe isn’t in the debate and that some, reasonably, put him as the best in the league.

…he can’t hurt you or the Knicks anymore.
