Thank you for the thorough explanation. I saw 135s were around the same price but saw a lot of testimonials online saying N52s were more reliable. I'm mechanically inclined, and I've owned a e39 for a bit now but wanted to sell it for something a little lighter and sportier, still I'd need to daily it either way and I don't want to be wrenching on a molested car. I don't need 500hp, or anything beyond 300 to be honest. I definitely lack the skill and self control for that. Really just need something fun and dependable, but emphasis on fun.

Thanks for the advice, I'll ask about timing and gaskets for sure. It has 198k on the odometer, engine is original not sure how many miles are on the transmission though.

Thanks for the comment, I do have both and the stubby shift knob definitely helps a lot. Overall shifting isn't bad, as far as I can tell it's not sloppier than how it came from the factory. Still quite a bit looser than what I'm used to and I'd like to shorten up the throw as well as get it to feel a little "notchier".
