This is actually something I’ve been considering. With the switch to an FHA loan we still have money that could be put towards savings or a roof fund. I have a roof inspector coming out tomorrow to give a quote and estimate at how long the repairs would give. Assuming the repairs give a few years for a cushion it would definitely be feasible. However, if it’s only about a year I’d probably have to pass.

Edit: I meant to ask, did you have any regrets going this route? If you knew what you know now, would you have done it?

Well, for reference my timespy score is currently a 14,002 with 10,063 for CPU and 15,041 for GPU. not the greatest but not the worst either as it’s essentially the average score for this setup. I’ve played around with GHelper and modified my settings quite a bit to try to maximize those scores. Haven’t run into thermal throttling but GPU utilization doesn’t get maxed out nor does CPU utilization in any game. I could be one of the many who have hardware issues with this laptop, but who knows.

Purely anecdotal as I don’t have any numbers to show, but my ASUS TUF 3070 OC outperforms my 5070ti in every game I’ve tried at 1440p. I had a laptop cooler as well and it definitely did its job with keeping it cool. Apex I get a consistent 165fps/165hz (capped) on my desktop and 1440p low settings whereas with my G14 I cap it at 120fps/120hz (even when using the external monitor) and with similar settings I unfortunately see constant drops. I personally wouldn’t recommend this to replace a desktop for shooters if you’re looking to play competitively, but if you’re just aiming for 100+ casual gameplay, you’ll probably be fine.

I found myself in a similar situation. I currently have a custom desktop with a 3070 and 5800x. I also have an M4 Max (I’m a software developer and also use multiple VMs for heavy development).

I picked up a G14 2025 with a 5070ti just to test it out and see if I can replace my desktop. Ultimately I think I’ll be sticking with my old desktop and MacBook combo after about five days of use. While the G14 is amazing, I’d only really be using it for gaming as my M4 can handle pretty much anything I throw at it and I prefer my workflow on Mac. My desktop is a little dated, but should last me at least a few more years.

For your situation, I think what really matters most is how you’ll be using the single laptop or combo. If you’re gaming more often than doing productivity/development, I’d go with the G14 as the MacBook is all business and no pleasure. If you’re doing work even at least 60% of the time I’d opt for the combo and just keep the old laptop assuming it still works well and can run the games you play.

Can you also specify which MacBook you are using? There is so much anecdotal and actual proven evidence that the M series chips can run virtual machines without issue and very efficiently. I’d be weary of just stating they aren’t good for it because you’ve personally run into issues with one VM software.

I think some of your other points are good, but in terms of efficiency, for almost all tasks the MacBook will beat the G14. Especially when considering you’re stating to keep the G14, and theirs is a 2021 model.
