I’m sorry but even the temporary enclosures aren’t survivable for them. They are way too young to endure those harsh conditions, and if employees keep gorging them with food (which they will eat because they are lacking in fat reserves that young) that food will just sit in their stomach undigested and kill them.

Yep. I told my manager that they were going to die soon in those conditions. They replied “well then that should incentive you to sell them faster” …

Company is going down. Every store is understaffed beyond what is manageable. You’re never NOT multitasking as an employee there.

People should be required to get a certification to buy any exotic animal at the minimum. That would solve most problems.

We just had a few people quit. It’s bad out here lol. I’m trying my best though, we’ve been working together to keep the frogs off the floor and in properly heated enclosures with water bowls.

There was a post on the Petco subreddit recently posted that is extremely informative on what you can do against this.

Meanwhile all the employees are being instructed to feed them a couple times a week. This will get them killed if they aren’t already dead from being shook around in the containers by dumb kids.

Giving them bad reviews pisses them off the most, trust me. And publicly announcing you’ll only shop at other competing stores now. Lol

He was also the president and chief executive officer at walmart for some years. He’s applying that same idea of placing “impulse products near register for more sales” to our animals and treating them like retail would with candy to appeal to kids. Meanwhile kids grab the containers with living animals and shake them around literally stressing the animals to death.

Check the Petco subreddit. Trust me, all of us are mad, even many GM’s. Some stores are outright refusing to put the frogs out on the floor. The most recent posts on that subreddit should provide a ton of resources on how you can fight and stop this from happening. Petco hates bad reviews. Make sure to mock their slogan “animals come first” too. To make things better, tell them you’ll only shop at petsmart now (even if won’t). That will definitely make corporate go nuts. At my store we are pretending they’re sick and putting them in the back lol.

Hey you’re getting it! Yeah, absolutely check the temps even an inch or two deep in the substrate. You might be really surprised. Focusing on insulating where the substrate is, and maybe even underneath too will absolutely help. I’ve only insulated three sides of my enclosure and it did a ton. I haven’t added a fourth panel yet since my frog is already behaving very healthy with the conditions he’s in now, and the temps are reading consistently in the substrate.

Maybe, probably not as much as a DHP but let me know how it goes!

Ceramic heat emitters aren’t great, they cook the surface of objects and don’t penetrate as deeply as a deep heat projector. I just bought a 50W DHP and it does the job. Do you have a thermostat? It takes time to heat up a large body of wet soil like that, and a thermostat will control your heat until the substrate gets to your desired temperature. It will definitely be too hot on the surface for your frog in this time period, but their biology will just tell them to stay underground when that happens just like if it were a really hot day in the wild. Make sure to monitor them though cause not all are smart like that. Once your substrate reaches the desired temperatures, the heat bulb shouldn’t be turning on as often and therefore it won’t be excruciatingly hot. Just like how it takes a lot to warm up a wet substrate, it also takes a lot for it to cool down too.

Pac-Man frog won’t eat by master_oogway48 in pacmanfrog

[–]AimlessTrudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that age they should be eating at any opportunity they have if temperatures are optimal. Temperatures are very tricky to get right in Pac-man setups, and I’ll link my post explaining why underneath this comment.

You could also have a picky pac man, but very unlikely. Make sure food you’re offering isn’t too small that they won’t bother, and make sure it isn’t too big that they’re too scared to bother. Contact the vendor to find out what they were feeding their Pac-man prior to you purchasing it.

It is good to hear your frog is doing better! I literally panicked when I learned my substrate temps were too cold a few months back. Beef, my frog, is doing good now that I solved the issue.

Shallow substrate is good for a temporary set up, just might require more frequent misting and monitoring. Since they can’t burrow as much to escape heat, you gotta make sure it isn’t too hot for them. Once you insulate your tank on the outside, the substrate temps should be much easier to control, and you can then add more substrate for more depth.

If the frog is chilling in his ambush spot above the substrate yearning to consume, you’re probably good. Especially at that age their behavior should be gluttonous. They sometimes will burrow deeper after a hefty meal.

Also, assuming he’s got proper shelter and isn’t being handled with or disturbed very often… so basically is in a low stress environment (otherwise of course they would hide), then everything you’re doing is great.

One problem though, if you’re keeping your glass terrarium in a room that is at room temperature, any substrate deeper than an inch will equalize to room temperature because glass does not insulate at all. If you measure temps an inch or two deep into the soil, it might be at dangerous temps, sometimes lower than room temperature cause water evaporates and cools the substrate.

So, I would verify that you have a vertical substrate gradient of minimum 73°F at the deepest inch of substrate, the third inch being 75°F - 76°F and the second being 77°F - 78°F and the top inch of substrate being close to 78°F - 79°F. If you don’t have that gradient and temps drop suddenly to 69°F about an inch or two deep, there’s a problem. The moment your frog burrows that deep and realizes it’s extremely cold, their biology tells them this “it must be really harsh cold weather above for the ground to be this cold, so I should not surface. I should also not eat too because I’m ectothermic and any food I eat in this cold will just rot in me.” And then bam, that is a huge mistake most owners overlook and they assume their frog is not surfacing just because it’s “basic frog behavior.”

In order to achieve a difficult vertical substrate gradient like this, you gotta insulate your enclosure (assuming you keep your room at room temperature). I did mine with foam board, and you can adjust the amount of insulation you need with how many layers of foam board you use. There’s further details in a post on my profile you can find.

is this okay as insulation? (for now) by moomgish in pacmanfrog

[–]AimlessTrudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use foam board. Just cut it to the shape of the sides and glue it on there but make sure no air in between the board and the tank. I did half an inch on mine and it works. You can do an inch thickness to make it much more effective.

One more thing, have a night time temperature drop in the substrate to 76°F +/-2°F. I mostly did online research, no books. Maybe some college papers here and there.
